Chapter 14 - The Turn of the Tide

“You’re making a mistake, Senator,” I said, my voice dropping to a low, cold whisper that made even the seasoned politician hesitate for a fraction of a second. “You think you’re holding all the cards because you control the guards outside and the corrupt judges downtown.”

Senator Vance chuckled, lowering the syringe by a fraction of an inch. “And what cards do you think you’re holding, Daniel? You’re unarmed, your security detail is unconscious in the hallway, and no one knows we’re standing in this room.”

“Are you sure about that?” I asked, a dark, confident smile breaking across my face.

Before the Senator could process my words, the overhead emergency lights in the hospital wing suddenly flashed bright red, followed by the heavy, authoritative drone of automated security shutters slamming down across every exit on the floor.

At the exact same moment, the reinforced door of Room 412 was blown inward with a deafening crash as a flashbang grenade detonated in the hallway. Smoke and blinding white light flooded the room.

The armed guard behind me panicked, spinning around toward the door, which gave me the split second I needed. I slammed my elbow backward into his ribs with every ounce of fury in my body, sending him crashing into the IV pole. The pistol flew from his hand skittering across the polished linoleum floor.

Senator Vance lunged toward the bed, raising the syringe to inject Elena, but Elena reacted with fierce maternal adrenaline—she swung the heavy plastic bassinet containing our baby sideways, striking the Senator square across the jaw.

He staggered backward, dropping the syringe. It shattered against the floor, its contents splashing harmlessly into a puddle of water.

Before Vance could recover his balance, Aunt Victoria marched through the smoke-filled doorway, flanked by four federal marshals bearing uncorrupted Department of Justice insignia, followed closely by Special Agent Marcus Vance—the *real* uncorrupted federal investigator who had been working undercover inside the bureau for two years to build a RICO case against the Senator.

“Senator Richard Vance,” Marcus announced loudly, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs in his hands. “You are under arrest for high treason, political racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and obstruction of justice.”

The Senator stared at Marcus, his face draining of all color, his bespoke suit suddenly looking like a prisoner's shroud. “You... you’re junior Vance. You were supposed to be compromised.”

“Family loyalty only goes so far when you’re standing on the wrong side of history, Uncle,” Marcus said coldly, slamming the handcuffs onto the Senator’s wrists and shoving him against the wall.

As the marshals dragged Senator Vance out of the room, his muffled curses echoing down the corridor, I rushed to the side of the bed, falling to my knees and pulling Elena and our newborn son into a fierce, shaking embrace.

“It’s over, El,” I whispered, tears finally breaking free. “It’s finally over.”
