Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Corporate Corridor

The morning sun cast long, sharp shadows across the glass towers of Sterling Holdings, but inside my executive office on the forty-second floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension. I sat behind my mahogany desk, my fingers steepled as I reviewed the preliminary data Marcus Vance had managed to decrypt overnight. The numbers were staggering. It wasn't just six hundred thousand dollars missing from our household accounts; it was a systematic, multi-million-dollar drainage of corporate assets funneled into personal real estate holdings in the Bahamas and high-risk speculative ventures managed exclusively by Lucas.
The door to my office swung open without a knock. My mother walked in, impeccably dressed in a tailored St. John suit, her blonde hair coiffed to perfection, carrying herself with the terrifying confidence of someone who believed she owned the world. Behind her stood Arthur Sterling, our senior vice president of operations and my mother’s lifelong loyal lapdog.
“Playing detective, Daniel?” my mother asked, her voice dripping with condescension as she walked over to my desk and tossed a manila folder onto the polished wood. “You packed bags like a petulant child and ran off to a cheap hotel with a gold-digger who cares only about the Sterling name. And now you’re wasting company time looking at ghost numbers?”
I didn’t flinch. I slowly opened the manila folder she had thrown down. Inside were termination papers—my termination papers—signed by the board of directors, which my mother effectively controlled through weighted voting shares.
“Effective immediately, your operational authority as CEO has been suspended pending an internal ethics review,” Arthur read aloud, his voice flat and rehearsed. “You are barred from accessing company servers, financial accounts, or subsidiary properties.”
I looked up at my mother, a calm, chilling smile playing on my lips. “Ethics review? That’s rich, coming from the woman who has been embezzling corporate funds to cover Lucas’s gambling debts in Macau.”
Arthur’s face drained of color. My mother, however, didn’t miss a beat. Her eyes narrowed into cold slits.
“You have no proof of such reckless slander,” she hissed, leaning over the desk. “And even if you did, who do you think the board will believe? A grieving son having a mental breakdown because his pregnant wife has him wrapped around her finger, or the matriarch who built this company alongside her late husband?”
“The board might believe her,” a calm, resonant voice echoed from the doorway.
We all turned. Standing in the entrance was Victoria Sterling—my estranged aunt, my father’s brilliant, ruthless sister who had been exiled from the company board twenty years ago after a bitter proxy battle with my mother. She wore a charcoal pantsuit, silver-rimmed glasses, and carried a leather briefcase that looked like an executioner’s satchel.
My mother’s face instantly lost its composure, her complexion turning the color of chalk. “Victoria. What are you doing here? This is a private corporate matter.”
“Not anymore, Eleanor,” Victoria said, stepping gracefully into the office and tossing a thick stack of legal documents onto my desk, right beside the termination papers. “As of this morning, I’ve acquired a controlling block of voting shares from the estate of our late uncle. Which means I am now the majority stakeholder of Sterling Holdings. And my first order of business as chairperson is to reinstate my nephew Daniel as CEO, audit every single account controlled by you and your incompetent son Lucas, and hand over your financial records to the federal prosecutor's office.”
The silence in the office was deafening. Arthur took a step backward toward the door, realizing he was standing on sinking sand. My mother stared at Victoria, her lips parting in silent rage and disbelief.
May you like
“You can’t do this,” my mother whispered, her voice trembling for the first time.
“Watch me,” Victoria replied coldly, turning to look at me with a warm, approving smile. “Welcome back to the helm, Daniel. Now, let’s go show your family what true power looks like.”
