Chapter 10 - The Empire We Built

One year to the day since Camila Reyes had caught that falling training knife by its handle, the private penthouse suite overlooking Lake Michigan was filled with quiet celebration.

The city outside hummed with orderly prosperity. The underworld had settled into a lasting, untouchable peace, governed not by chaotic violence and reckless ambition, but by unbreakable discipline, ironclad security, and absolute loyalty.

Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding a crystal tumbler of aged scotch, watching the distant lights of the harbor twinkle against the dark water.

Soft footsteps approached behind him.

Camila stepped into his field of vision, wearing an elegant emerald evening gown that replaced her usual charcoal suit, though the sharp, focused intelligence in her dark eyes remained unchanged.

Julian handed her a second crystal glass filled sparkling water with a twist of lime.

"One year," Julian murmured, clinking his glass gently against hers. "From unfiled expense reports to absolute control of the Chicago skyline. I’d say your resume panned out."

Camila took a slow sip, looking out at the glittering expanse of the city they had secured together. "It was a challenging transition, Mr. Kade. The coffee machine in your office took at least a month to calibrate properly."

Julian laughed, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close against his side—a gesture of profound trust and deep, unshakeable partnership.

"You know, Camila," Julian whispered, his voice warm and steady against the cool night air. "When I first mocked your lack of combat skills in that gym, I thought I was the most dangerous man in the room."

She looked up at him, a faint, knowing smile touching her lips. "And what did you learn?"

"I learned," Julian replied, pulling her closer as the city lights stretched out beneath them like a kingdom won and held, "that a mafia boss with an army is formidable. But a mafia boss with the right secretary is completely unstoppable."
