Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

Three months later, the transition of power was fully complete.

The Chicago syndicate, having suffered devastating logistical losses and the exposure of their internal moles, had officially signed a non-aggression pact with Julian Kade, ceding complete control of the northern shipping corridors and financial districts to the Romano-Kade enterprise.

Inside the corporate headquarters, the atmosphere had transformed from a tense, paranoid war room into an impenetrable fortress of corporate efficiency and absolute loyalty.

On a bright Tuesday morning, a delegation of high-ranking regional directors gathered in the executive boardroom for a major strategic review. The air was thick with tension as older capos and regional bosses sat around the mahogany table, whispering nervously about the recent shakeups.

Julian sat at the head of the table, calm, composed, and completely untouchable in a charcoal three-piece suit.

Standing quietly to his right, with a thick encrypted ledger resting against her forearm and her security badge gleaming in the morning light, was Camila.

"Before we discuss the Q2 revenue projections," Julian said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room, "there is a personnel matter that requires formal recognition."

He gestured toward Camila with an open hand.

The older capos exchanged confused glances. One of them, a veteran enforcer named Salvatore who had survived three syndicate wars, cleared his throat nervously. "Boss... with all due respect, Miss Reyes is your executive secretary. Why are we bringing her into an operational strategy meeting?"

Julian smiled—a cold, confident expression that made Salvatore instantly regret speaking.

"Miss Reyes is no longer my secretary, Salvatore," Julian said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. "She is the Chief of Operations and head of corporate security. And as of this morning, she has successfully audited every single regional ledger in this room."

Camila stepped forward, opening her leather-bound ledger and placing three sheets of paper down on the mahogany table in front of Salvatore and two other regional directors.

The older men looked down at the papers. Their faces instantly lost all color.

The documents detailed hidden kickbacks, unauthorized skimming operations, and secret communications with the decimated rival syndicate—crimes they had believed were buried beneath layers of encrypted shell companies.

"You... you knew?" Salvatore choked out, staring up at Camila with absolute terror in his eyes.

"I knew before you finished printing the invoices, Salvatore," Camila said, her voice entirely flat and devoid of mercy. "Your accounting errors were frankly insulting to a trained professional."

Julian leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, his dark eyes locking onto the trembling men.

"You have twenty-four hours to sign over your regional assets to Camila's direct oversight and leave the city," Julian said quietly, the weight of his authority crushing every ounce of resistance in the room. "Or you can stay, and let my Chief of Operations demonstrate what happens to people who can't read a calendar."

Nobody argued. Within two minutes, three signed resignation forms slid across the mahogany table.

The room was entirely theirs.
