Chapter 4 - The Breach

The flashing red emergency strobes painted the concrete walls in a frantic, bloody rhythm as the heavy reinforced doors of the tactical gym shuddered under the impact of heavy breaching charges.
"Diaz! Form a defensive wedge!" Julian ordered, his voice dropping into the cold, authoritative tone of a man accustomed to commanding an empire under fire. All traces of his earlier mockery were entirely gone, replaced by the lethal focus of a syndicate boss fighting for his life.
Diaz yanked two of his remaining guards forward, their Sig Sauers raised toward the double doors. "They've got thermal charges! They're cutting through the steel hinges!"
Julian spun around, looking for an exit route, only to realize the truth: the bunker had only one primary elevator and one narrow, easily chokepoint stairwell leading back up to the corporate suites. They were trapped in a concrete box, and someone inside the organization had given the exact security codes required to bypass the exterior electronic locks.
Suddenly, with a deafening roar that shook dust from the ceiling, the upper hinge of the steel double doors blew outward in a shower of sparks and white-hot shrapnel. A thick cloud of gray smoke billowed into the gym, obscuring the hallway beyond.
"Hold your fire! Wait for visual!" Diaz shouted, his knuckles white around his grip.
Through the clearing smoke, heavy combat boots stepped across the shattered threshold. One, two, three, four, five figures poured into the room in synchronized tactical formation. They wore unmarked black tactical gear, Kevlar ballistic vests, and full-face gas masks with dark, reflective visors. Each man carried a suppressed short-barreled rifle with laser sights painting the floor in lethal green dots.
Professional hit squad. Highly trained, heavily funded, and utterly ruthless.
"Kade!" the lead operative barked through a voice modulator, his weapon instantly locking onto Julian’s chest. "End of the line! Drop your weapons or the girl dies first!"
Julian’s jaw tightened. He didn't carry a weapon, but his protective instinct flared instantly. He stepped half an inch in front of Camila, positioning his own body between her and the barrels of five assault rifles.
"You want me, you take me," Julian snarled, his eyes narrowing. "Who’s your buyer? The Moretti family? Or did the federal task force finally outsource their dirty work?"
The lead operative let out a cold, distorted laugh through his mask. "Nobody's asking questions, Kade. We were hired to scrub the entire room. Starting with your expensive little secretary."
The operative's rifle twitched upward, centering directly on Camila’s forehead.
Julian’s heart skipped a beat—a foreign, terrifying sensation he hadn't felt in a decade. He lunged forward to shield her, but before his hand could even graze her shoulder, Camila moved.
It wasn't a defense. It was an execution.
In one blinding, fluid motion, Camila ducked beneath Julian’s reaching arm, stepping past him with absolute predatory grace. Her right hand came up, holding the Beretta she had taken from Miller’s holster.
Crack. Crack.
Two deafening gunshots shattered the acoustics of the concrete bunker.
Before the mercenaries could even squeeze their triggers, the two lead operatives dropped like stone, their visors cracked and stained with dark crimson as precision rounds tore straight through their ceramic faceplates.
The remaining three operatives staggered backward in sheer disbelief, their training completely failing them in the face of impossible speed.
"What the—!" one of them shouted, swinging his barrel toward her.
Camila didn't hesitate. She didn't seek cover behind a concrete pillar. She advanced directly into the line of fire, sliding low across the slick rubber mats. As she slid, her second shot caught the third operative squarely in the knee joint, dropping him with a agonizing shriek.
"Diaz! Cover the flanks!" Camila commanded—her voice no longer the flat, submissive tone of an executive secretary, but the ice-cold, authoritative bark of a military commander issuing combat orders.
Diaz, paralyzed by shock for a fraction of a second, snapped into action. "Cover her! Fire!"
The remaining guards opened up with suppressive fire, forcing the final two mercenaries to dive behind the heavy steel equipment racks for cover. Glass shattered, dumbbells flew, and the air filled with the acrid stench of cordite and burning rubber.
Julian stood frozen in the open space of the matted floor, the empty air rushing past his face where bullets had just zipped by. He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes locked entirely on Camila.
She crouched behind a heavy steel weight bench, her breathing slow and controlled, her finger resting lightly on the trigger of her pistol as she reloaded with a fresh magazine in less than two seconds.
The woman who organized his calendar, poured his coffee, and took abuse with a blank stare was currently dismantling a professional wet-work squad like it was a Tuesday morning filing task.
"Mr. Kade," Camila said without looking back at him, her eyes fixed on the shadows where the last two mercenaries were hiding. "Stay down. The remaining two are positioning for a crossfire."
Julian stared at her back, a profound, chilling realization washing over him.

He hadn't been employing a secretary.
He had been harboring a ghost.
