Chapter 3 - The Race Against the Compactor

"Return fire!" Matteo barked, his voice commanding absolute obedience over the chaotic crackle of automatic gunfire.

His elite enforcers instantly fanned out into tactical formations, using rusted chassis and heavy steel beams as cover. The heavy submachine guns held by Matteo’s bodyguards roared to life, laying down a punishing wall of lead that suppressed the shooters stationed along the high scrap ridges.

Caleb huddled terrified beneath the wheel well of the lead SUV, covering his ears. Matteo dropped low, crouched beside the boy, and pulled him slightly deeper into the safety of the armored vehicle's frame.

"Stay here, Caleb," Matteo whispered, his tone steady and calm despite the hellfire erupting around them. "Keep your head down."

"Mr. Matteo!" Caleb cried out over the thunder of gunshots. "Look at the big crane! It's moving!"

Matteo turned his gaze toward the center of the yard. Through the smoke and flickering yellow floodlights, he saw the colossal yellow arm of an industrial gantry crane swing slowly into motion. Suspended from its heavy steel cables was a massive, dented iron container—the exact type used to haul heavy industrial debris. Below it, a massive hydraulic ram was cycling back and forth, its terrifying steel jaws ready to compress tons of iron into tiny, solid blocks.

A digital clock mounted above the control shed read 3:52 AM. The automated morning disposal cycle was initiating early.

"They're running the cycle right now!" Paulie shouted, dropping a spent magazine to the mud and slapping a fresh one into his rifle. "Those mercenaries aren't trying to fight us off, Matteo! They're just stalling us until the crusher finishes the job!"

A cold fury unlike anything Matteo had ever experienced surged through his veins. These men weren't just kidnapping a child for leverage or money; they were attempting to erase her completely, leaving no evidence behind.

"Cover me!" Matteo roared.

Without waiting for his men to form a screen, Matteo broke from cover and sprinted straight into the crossfire. Bullets kicked up spurts of mud and pinged off rusted fenders all around him, but he moved like a man possessed, completely indifferent to his own survival.

A mercenary wearing tactical gear stepped out from behind an overturned truck, raising a shotgun directly at Matteo. Before the mercenary could pull the trigger, Matteo fired three rapid rounds from his pistol, dropping the man instantly. He kept moving, vaulting over a pile of sharp scrap copper and charging up the slick steel ramp leading toward the main operational platform.

Above him, the heavy iron container was being slowly positioned over the primary chute of the compactor.

"Daddy!"

A tiny, desperate voice cut through the roaring diesel engines and the crack of gunfire. It was faint, muffled by thick steel walls, but to Matteo's ears, it was louder than a cannon blast.

"Daddy! Help me! It's dark!"

"Lily!" Matteo screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice cracking with emotion. "I'm here baby! Daddy's here!"

He reached the base of the crane platform just as two more armed guards rushed down the steel staircase to intercept him. Matteo didn't slow his pace. He fired on the move, taking down the first guard and tackling the second into a heavy steel railing, sending the man tumbling twenty feet into the darkness below.

Matteo looked up at the crane's glass control cabin hanging twenty feet above the platform. Inside, a man in a black tactical jacket was frantically pulling the control levers, trying to dump the steel container directly into the crushing pit.

"Paulie!" Matteo shouted into his shoulder radio. "Get the winch controls on the ground! I'm taking the crane!"

"On my way!" Paulie yelled back, his team aggressively clearing the remaining shooters from the yard floor.

Matteo grabbed the icy ladder rungs leading up to the control cabin and climbed furiously, his hands bleeding from sharp metal edges, his heart hammering against his ribs as he raced against the seconds ticking away on the industrial clock.
