Chapter 6 - A Web of Betrayal

The penthouse vault was an impenetrable fortress built atop a thirty-story luxury high-rise in downtown Chicago. Reinforced with six-inch ballistic glass, biometric locks, and a private security detachment composed entirely of former special forces soldiers, it was the safest location in the Midwest.
Inside the sprawling, warm living room, Lily was sitting on a plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a fleece blanket, sipping hot chocolate while a team of private physicians checked her over. Aside from a few minor smudges of dirt and emotional fatigue, she was completely unharmed.
Caleb sat next to her, wearing brand-new, comfortable clothes that Matteo’s staff had rushed to provide. He was staring in utter disbelief at a plate piled high with bacon, pancakes, and fresh fruit. He had never seen so much food in his entire life.
"Eat up, son," Matteo said, walking into the room after changing into a clean dark suit. He placed a gentle hand on Caleb's head. "Everything here is yours."
"Thank you, Mr. Matteo," Caleb said softly before diving into the meal with overwhelming gratitude.
Lily reached out and grabbed her father’s sleeve. "Daddy, are you going away again?"
Matteo knelt down beside his daughter, kissing her forehead gently. "Just for a little while, my sweet girl. I have to go handle some business so we can be safe forever. Caleb is going to stay right here with you."
Lily looked at Caleb and smiled warmly. "Okay, Daddy. Caleb is my big brother now."
Caleb froze for a moment, his eyes widening at the word 'brother', a warmth filling his chest that he had never felt before in his lonely life on the streets. Matteo smiled deeply at the interaction before standing up and joining Paulie in the adjacent tactical control room.
"What's the status on Caruso?" Matteo asked, his expression immediately shifting back to cold, calculating business.
"Dante agreed to meet," Paulie reported, looking at a secure monitor display. "He was furious when he heard Marcus used his scrapyard to hide Lily. Caruso might be our rival, but he has a strict code—he doesn't hurt kids. He felt used by Marcus just as much as we were."
"Where is the meeting?"
"An abandoned subway terminal under the Old Federal Reserve building," Paulie said. "Neutral ground. Three men each."
An hour later, Matteo and Paulie walked into the damp, shadowy depths of the subterranean subway station. The air smelled of old dust and cold iron. Standing under a solitary dangling light bulb was Dante Caruso—a silver-haired, veteran mob boss surrounded by two hulking bodyguards.
"Matteo," Dante said, his voice deep and raspy. He looked closely at Matteo's face. "I heard your little girl is safe. Thank God for that. If my men had known what Marcus Vance was planning at my yard, I would have flayed them alive myself."
"I know it wasn't you, Dante," Matteo said calmly. "Marcus orchestrated this to start a full-scale war between our families. He wanted us to destroy each other so he and his political backers could step in and claim the entire Midwest logistics network."
Dante gritted his teeth, his eyes flashing with anger. "The politician behind Marcus is Senator Raymond Vance—Marcus's uncle. He's been using federal law enforcement to put pressure on my docks while Marcus pulled the trigger on your family."
"They want a war," Matteo said, leaning forward into the light. "So let's give them one. But not the war they're expecting."
Dante raised an eyebrow. "What are you proposing, Lombardi?"
"Marcus thinks Lily is dead and that I'm paralyzed with grief," Matteo explained, a sharp, deadly intelligence in his eyes. "We feed his pride. We let the media report that the Lombardi syndicate is falling apart. Marcus will move fast to claim my main financial vault beneath the Old Union Bank before my captains can secure it."

Dante chuckled darkly, understanding the brilliant maneuver. "And when he walks into that vault to collect his reward..."
"We spring the net," Matteo finished. "And wipe Senator Vance's corrupt shadow empire off the map once and for all."
