Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

The silence that settled over the rainy scrap yard was heavier than the steel beams surrounding them.
Matteo stood motionless, holding his daughter tightly against his chest while staring at the tiny glowing screen of the tactical radio. The voice coming through the speaker was unmistakable. It was Marcus Vance—a man who had stood beside Matteo at his wife’s funeral, a man who had held Lily as an infant, a man who had been given absolute authority over the Lombardi family’s innermost security measures.
"Team Lead, respond immediately," Marcus's voice barked again through the radio, tinged with growing impatience. "The sun is coming up in an hour. Is the child gone? Did you make it look like an accident?"
Matteo brought the radio to his mouth. His tone was deadpan, colder than the icy rain pouring over his face.
"She’s alive, Marcus."
Silence instantly gripped the other end of the line. The heavy breathing of Marcus Vance was the only sound transmitting across the encrypted channel.
"M-Matteo?" Marcus stuttered, his smooth, arrogant composure shattering in a single second. "How... how did you find—"
"I gave you everything," Matteo said softly, his voice echoing off the metal stacks. "I gave you rank, wealth, respect, and my complete trust. I treated you like a brother."
"Matteo, listen to me—"
"No, you listen to me," Matteo interrupted, his eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute fury. "You used my security codes. You sold my daughter's life to buy power. You put a four-year-old child in a trash compactor."
"It wasn't personal, Matteo!" Marcus shouted nervously over the radio, dropped all pretenses. "The city is changing! The foreign syndicates offered fifty million dollars for your docks and your logistics routes! You were getting soft after Evelyn died! You were focusing on family instead of business! You were weak!"
"I am going to find you, Marcus," Matteo whispered into the microphone. "And when I do, there is no place on this earth far enough or deep enough to hide you from me."
"You won't get the chance!" Marcus sneered, panic turning into desperation. "The whole city is already against you! By noon, the police will have warrants for your arrest for the junkyard massacre, and Dante Caruso's entire organization is mobilizing to take your territory! You're a ghost walking, Lombardi!"
The line went dead with a loud burst of static.
Paulie spat into the mud, his face contorted in sheer disgust. "That miserable, backstabbing snake. I'll tear Chicago apart with my bare hands to find him."
"No," Matteo said, handing the radio back to Paulie. "Marcus wants us angry. He wants us running around the city blind, making mistakes. He thinks he’s pulled off a masterstroke. We are going to let him think he’s winning."
Matteo turned his attention back to Caleb, who was standing quietly in the rain, looking exhausted and shivering. Matteo walked over, taking off his expensive leather jacket, and wrapped it gently around the boy’s small shoulders.
"Caleb," Matteo said softly. "You saved my daughter's life tonight. You brought light back into my world when I thought everything was lost. From this moment on, you are under my protection. You will never sleep in a cold van again. You will never go hungry. You are part of my family now."
Caleb looked up at the legendary mob boss, tears welling in his young eyes. "Really, mister?"
"I give you my solemn word," Matteo said firmly.
He turned to his lead enforcer. "Get Lily and Caleb into the armored SUV. Take them directly to the secure downtown penthouse vault. Double the guard, bring in our private medical team, and do not let anyone in or out without my personal voice authorization."
"What about you, boss?" Paulie asked.

Matteo looked out across the sprawling scrapyard toward the glowing skyline of Chicago in the distance. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, painting the clouds in shades of bruised purple and crimson blood.
"Call Dante Caruso," Matteo said, a dark smile playing on his lips. "It's time to set a trap."
