Chapter 16 - The Traitor Within

The chaos in the safehouse lasted less than three minutes, but it felt like a lifetime. Tactical agents in full riot gear pinned two armed intruders to the living room floor, slapping heavy steel cuffs on their wrists while clearing the rest of the house with military efficiency.
Mara Jenkins rushed down the hallway, bursting through the splintered door of the bathroom where I stood shaking in the corner.
“Emma! Are you hurt?” Mara demanded, her hands gripping my shoulders as she checked me over for injuries.
“I’m... I’m okay,” I panted, dropping the ceramic bottle I had been holding as the adrenaline finally began to drain out of my system, leaving my knees weak and trembling. “They almost got through the door.”
“You’re safe now. It’s over,” Mara said, pulling me into a fierce, protective hug. “Federal backup arrived just in time.”
In the living room, the two masked intruders were dragged out toward waiting transport vans in heavy chains. One of them lifted his head as he passed the doorway, his eyes locking onto mine through his ski mask with a chilling, knowing smirk.
As the chaos settled and federal investigators began processing the crime scene, a senior U.S. Marshal walked up to Mara with a grim expression, holding a heavy tactical radio and a stack of recovered ID cards.
“We ran their identification,” the marshal reported quietly. “They aren’t freelance mercenaries or cartel thugs.”
Mara frowned, crossing her arms. “Then who are they?”
“Active-duty deputy U.S. marshals assigned to the regional district office,” the marshal said flatly. “And one of them was the primary transport officer who signed off on Daniel Mercer’s transfer logs two weeks ago.”
The blood drained from my face. “A mole inside federal law enforcement.”
“More than a mole,” Sarah Vance said, stepping into the living room through the shattered front door with her briefcase in hand. She had arrived with the backup convoy. “Daniel didn't build his empire just through business intimidation. For twenty years, he paid off key officials in local and federal agencies to ensure his operations were never audited.”
“Which means even behind bars in maximum security, Daniel still has powerful people on his payroll who are desperate to eliminate the only witness who can put him away forever,” Mara added, looking at me with grave concern.
“They won't stop coming,” I realized, a cold, hard resolve replacing the lingering fear in my chest. “As long as I’m breathing, whoever is left in his network will keep trying to silence me.”
“Then we don’t hide anymore,” Sarah said firmly, opening her briefcase and pulling out a thick manila folder labeled *Confidential - Federal RICO Indictment*. “We take the fight directly to them.”
“What do you mean?” Mara asked.
May you like
“We use the mole’s arrest to trigger a massive, coordinated sweep of every corrupt official on Daniel’s payroll before they realize their operatives failed tonight,” Sarah replied with a sharp, determined smile. “And we do it tomorrow morning.”
