Chapter 20 - The Unseen Horizon

The autumn wind rustled through the golden maple leaves on the campus quad, carrying the crisp scent of coming winter. I stood near the brick pathway for a moment, watching the black sedan merge into the distant city traffic until it disappeared completely behind a bus.
Maybe it was just a coincidence. Maybe private security firms patrolled university towns all the time. Or maybe, as Sarah Vance had warned me countless times during our late-night debriefs, the tentacles of my father’s old empire stretched further into the corporate underworld than federal investigators had ever managed to map.
I didn't panic. I didn't reach for my phone to call Mara in a blind panic. I simply adjusted the strap of my backpack, took a deep, steady breath of the cool October air, and continued walking toward my dormitory.
That evening, sitting at my small oak desk with my laptop open and my silver locket pendant resting safely on the corner of the blotter, I received an encrypted email from an unknown sender with no subject line.
I opened it cautiously. Inside was a single digital attachment: a scanned photograph dated twenty-three years ago, showing my father standing outside a downtown bank alongside a man whose face had been deliberately cropped out of the image—a man wearing an expensive gold signet ring identical to the one worn by the regional federal prosecutor currently overseeing our asset forfeiture division.
Beneath the photo was a single line of text typed in plain Courier font:
*He didn't build the empire alone. And the foundation is still standing.*
My pulse quickened, not with fear, but with a sharp, electric surge of clarity. The trial was over, Daniel was locked behind maximum-security bars, and the headlines had faded from the front page—but the real war, the deeper corruption woven into the fabric of the city’s elite, had only just begun to show its true face.
I reached out slowly and touched the cool metal of the silver locket pendant.
I didn't close my laptop. Instead, I opened an encrypted document, created a new folder labeled *Project Horizon*, and began typing.
They thought they had silenced me in that emergency room months ago. They thought taking down Daniel Mercer would sweep the rest of the rot under the rug.
They were about to find out how wrong they were.

I saved the file, locked my screen, and looked out my dormitory window at the city lights twinkling across the dark horizon, ready for whatever chapter came next.
