Chapter 5 - Ghosts from the Past

Two weeks after the arrest, the quiet safety of the advocacy center was interrupted by a visitor I never expected to see. It wasn't Mara Jenkins or Dr. Ramirez, and it certainly wasn't anyone from my family.
Her name was Sarah Vance—no relation to my father’s arrogant corporate lawyer, as she made abundantly clear the moment she sat down across from me in the quiet counseling room.
Sarah was in her late forties, with sharp, intelligent eyes, silver-streaked dark hair, and a worn leather briefcase that looked like it had traveled thousands of miles. She introduced herself as an independent investigative journalist specializing in corporate corruption and missing persons cases in the tri-state area.
“Emma Mercer?” she asked softly, opening a thick manila folder filled with yellowed newspaper clippings and photocopied documents.
“Yes,” I replied, gripping the arms of my chair slightly. Ever since the night in the ER, my guard was always up. “Who sent you here?”
“Nobody sent me,” Sarah answered honestly, leaning back and folding her hands. “I read about your father's arrest in the national syndications. The domestic abuse charges caught my eye, but it was his corporate history that made me buy a plane ticket.”
I frowned. “Mercer Logistics? Everyone in town thought he was just a ruthless businessman.”
“Ruthless is a polite word for what Daniel Mercer has been doing for the last twenty years,” Sarah said grimly, sliding a photograph across the table. “Do you recognize this woman?”
I looked down at the glossy, faded photograph. It showed a young woman with laughing eyes and dark hair tied back in a ponytail, standing outside an office building that looked strikingly similar to my father’s old headquarters.
“No,” I whispered. “I’ve never seen her before.”
“Her name was Clara Sterling,” Sarah said, her voice dropping lower. “Twenty-two years ago, she was Daniel Mercer’s chief financial officer and legal secretary at his very first startup company—a company that went bankrupt under deeply suspicious circumstances just two weeks after Clara vanished off the face of the earth.”
A cold chill crept down my spine. “Vanished? Like she ran away?”
“That’s what your father told the police back in 2004,” Sarah replied, tapping a finger on a police report dated twenty-two years ago. “He claimed she embezzled fifty thousand dollars from company accounts and fled the state to avoid prosecution. The case went cold because Daniel had powerful friends in the local police department who never dug deeper than his initial statement.”
“Why are you showing me this now?” I asked, my heart pounding against my ribs.
“Because when federal agents raided your father’s corporate archives last week under the new warrants, they didn't just find tax fraud documents,” Sarah said, leaning forward with intensity in her eyes. “They found a locked steel safe in the basement of his old warehouse. Inside that safe wasn't money.”
She paused, letting the heavy silence settle between us before delivering the twist.

“Inside that safe was Clara Sterling’s driver’s license, her engagement ring... and a signed confession stating she was about to expose your father for multi-million-dollar insurance fraud the very night she disappeared.”
