Chapter 15 - Winter Solstice at the Lake

Winter descended upon Lake Briar with a breathtaking, silent beauty.

The lake froze over in a thick, crystal-clear sheet of ice, reflecting the pale winter sun by day and a canopy of brilliant diamond stars by night. The newly completed southern marina stood sturdy against the freezing temperatures, its deep-water slips winterized and secured until the spring thaw.

I spent the long, cold evenings in the study, reviewing financial ledgers, reading classic literature, and enjoying the profound, uninterrupted peace of the estate.

On the night of the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, I walked out onto the front porch wrapped heavy in my navy wool coat, listening to the absolute stillness of the frozen woods.

Duke walked beside me, his breath puffing white clouds into the freezing air.

For the first time since Arthur passed away, I didn't feel lonely. I felt anchored. The estate wasn't just land, brick, and timber; it was a testament to survival, resilience, and unwavering boundaries.

And I—Ruth Vance—remained exactly where I had always belonged: the sole keeper of Briar Lake.
