Chapter 4 - The Investors Arrive Early

At 10:15 AM, long before the four-hour deadline had expired, a sleek black Mercedes pulled up the long gravel driveway of the Briar Lake estate.
I was sitting on the front porch with a fresh cup of coffee when Richard Henderson, CEO of Henderson Capital and the primary investor in Daniel’s supposed marina project, stepped out of the vehicle, followed by his wife, Eleanor.
Richard looked around, confused, noticing the pile of designer luggage sitting on the lawn near the guesthouse driveway, where Vanessa was currently shrieking at a moving company she had frantically called.
"Ruth! Good morning!" Richard called out, walking up the porch steps with a warm smile. "We’re a bit early for the brunch Daniel invited us to, but we wanted to catch the morning lake view."
"Good morning, Richard, Eleanor," I said, standing up to greet them. "You’re welcome to the view, but there won't be any brunch today. And as for Daniel... well, he’s currently in the middle of relocating."
Richard’s smile faltered. He glanced over his shoulder at the pile of Louis Vuitton luggage and Vanessa crying into her phone near a rental van.
"Relocating? What do you mean? Daniel told us he and Vanessa owned this estate outright, and that we were meeting today to finalize the four-million-dollar equity investment for the lakefront marina project."
I gestured to the two empty chairs across from me. "Please, sit down. Let’s get a few things straight before Daniel comes out here to embarrass himself further."
Richard and Eleanor exchanged uneasy glances, but sat down.
"Daniel told you he owned the property?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Well, yes," Richard admitted, adjusting his sunglasses. "He said he inherited it from his father and that his mother—meaning you—lived in a small cottage nearby as a retiree. He pitched himself as the managing partner of Briar Lake Holdings."
I let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Daniel couldn't manage a lemonade stand without losing the lemons. The property belongs entirely to the Briar Lake Trust. I am the sole trustee, the sole owner, and the person who actually greenlights any commercial development on this lake."
Eleanor gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "Good heavens. Are you telling us that Daniel lied to us about his ownership?"
"He lied about everything," I said firmly. "And furthermore, without my signature as trustee, any contract Daniel had you sign regarding the marina project is legally null and void. It's a fraudulent conveyance of trust assets."
Before Richard could process the bombshell, the front door burst open, and Daniel rushed out onto the porch, his face flushed, wearing an expensive designer shirt that was half-tucked into his jeans.
"Dad—I mean, Richard! You're here!" Daniel panted, forcing a desperate, manic smile. "Ignore the luggage out there, it's just... we're remodeling the guesthouse wing! Come inside, let's talk about the marina contracts!"
Richard stood up slowly, staring at Daniel with a look of absolute disgust.
"Sit down, Daniel," Richard said coldly. "Your mother just filled us in on a few... details regarding who actually owns this estate. And who controls the trust."
Daniel stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from Richard to me, and then to Marcus Vance, who was standing quietly near the doorway with a clipboard.

"You... you told them?" Daniel hissed, glaring at me. "You ruined my life! You just sabotaged a four-million-dollar deal out of petty spite!"
"No, Daniel," I said, my voice cutting through the morning air like steel. "You sabotaged yourself the day you forgot who built this empire. And right now, you have two hours left to get off my property before the sheriff removes you personally."
