Chapter 8 - The Aftermath at Briar Lake

By evening, the chaos of downtown Chicago felt a million miles away as our town car rolled back through the wrought-iron gates of Briar Lake.

The sun was sinking below the tree line, setting the surface of the lake ablaze with molten gold and bruised purple clouds. Duke trotted out from the boathouse as the car door opened, his tail wagging happily as he came to greet me.

I knelt down, burying my fingers in his thick fur.

"We survived, boy," I murmured, kissing the top of his head.

Marcus stepped out of the front passenger seat, carrying his briefcase and a thick stack of finalized injunction documents from the county courthouse.

"Well, Ruth," Marcus said, letting out a long breath as he stretched his arms. "The emergency injunctions are filed. Vanguard Bank has officially withdrawn the foreclosure notice, and Julian Sterling's internal compliance team is currently tearing his loan department apart. As for Daniel and Vanessa..."

"What about them?" I asked, standing up and brushing a speck of dust from my trousers.

"Vanessa's parents reportedly cut her off after hearing about the federal fraud investigation. They packed up their things from a temporary motel room this afternoon and drove back down to Florida. Daniel is currently crashing on a friend's couch in the city, trying to figure out how to pay his legal retainer."

I walked slowly up the wooden steps of the front porch, unlocking the heavy oak door and stepping into the quiet, pristine foyer of the main house. It smelled of lemon polish and fresh cedar, completely free of the toxic tension that Vanessa had brought into our lives.

"Did he try to call?" I asked quietly.

Marcus nodded. "Three times. I sent him straight to voicemail."

"Good."

I walked over to the kitchen island—the very spot where Vanessa had casually humiliated me just forty-eight hours ago—and picked up my chipped ceramic coffee mug.

"Marcus," I said, turning to face my longtime attorney and friend. "What's the status of the commercial marina lease that Richard Henderson wanted to invest in?"

Marcus smiled faintly. "Henderson called me an hour ago. He apologized profusely for falling for Daniel’s lies, and he wants to know if Briar Lake Holdings is still open to partnering directly with Henderson Capital—without intermediaries."

I walked over to the large picture window overlooking the lake, watching the first evening stars begin to blink into existence above the water.

"Tell Richard we'll meet him for breakfast tomorrow," I said, a faint smile touching my lips. "And this time, we'll discuss terms like real business partners."
