CHAPTER 10: FRACTURED TIME

The air inside the subterranean chamber did not merely warm up; it began to warp.
As the giant iron rings surrounding the Phantom Engine began their slow, rhythmic rotation, the localized temporal field surrounding the facility began to fracture. Reality itself seemed to splinter into overlapping, translucent layers of space and time.
Julian looked down at his hands. For a terrifying second, he saw three different versions of his own arm—one holding a brass wrench, one bleeding from a deep gash, and one perfectly still.
"Julian!" Evelyn cried out, her voice pitching up and down as if she were speaking through a long metal tube.
Julian turned to look at her. In her place stood a shimmering cascade of temporal echoes: he saw Evelyn as a young girl running through a library, Evelyn as she stood in his shop hours ago, and a dark, terrifying vision of Evelyn standing over his tombstone in a ruined, ash-covered city.
"Hold onto the console!" Julian roared, fighting against the dizzying nausea tearing at his brain. "The temporal gradient is breaking down! Past, present, and future are bleeding into the same space!"
Beside them on the granite dais, the frozen figure of Silas Vance began to move.
The single bead of sweat on his cheek rolled down his skin, dripping onto the brass gear housing with a soft splat. He blinked, gasping for air as if he had just surfaced from a deep dive in frozen water.
"The pressure... the pressure is too high!" Silas cried out, his voice raspy and ancient, continuing the exact sentence he had started fifty years ago. He turned his head, his wide, wild eyes locking onto Julian.
Silas froze, staring at the young man standing before him holding the leather journal. "Julian...? No... you were only seven... how..."
"Father," Julian choked out, stepping forward and catching the old man as his knees buckled from fifty years of sudden muscle atrophy. "It’s me. It’s Julian. It’s been fifty years."
Silas raised a trembling, calloused hand, touching Julian’s cheek, his fingers feeling the warm skin, the dark stubble, the soot from the shop fire. Tears leaked from the older man’s eyes. "Fifty years... my god, Julian. I failed. I couldn't stop Aris in time..."
"You didn't fail," Julian said fiercely, helping his father stand against the console. "You left the journal. You left the Key. I found them, Father. We are here to finish it."
"There is no time to finish it, Silas Vance!" a booming, amplified voice echoed through the vast, warping chamber.
BOOM!
The iron breaching pod smashed through the ceiling of the concourse, crushing a row of glass tubes and scattering glowing purple fluid across the iron floorboards.
The heavy steel hatch swung open with a hiss of steam.
Lord Aris stepped out into the swirling temporal mist. His polished silver skull mask was scorched, his navy uniform stained with oil, but his eyes burned behind the hollow eye-sockets with absolute, unhinged madness. Behind him emerged twenty steam-armored Syndicate troopers, their iron rifles pointed directly at the dais.
"Look at this," Aris laughed, his voice distorted by the fracturing time-field, echoing in three distinct pitches at once. "The tragic reunion of the Vance family! Father and son, united at last in the graveyard of their own ambition!"
Aris raised his ivory cane, pointing its glowing purple tip at Silas. "Fifty years I waited for this crystal to thaw, Silas. Fifty years of ruling a city of fools, waiting for the moment I could rewrite history and claim my rightful seat as the absolute ruler of the new world!"
"You will rule nothing, Aris!" Evelyn shouted, stepping in front of Julian and Silas, her silver dagger reflecting the violet light of the core. "The temporal field is unstable! If you force the core into the secondary converter, you will tear the continent apart!"
"Then let it tear!" Aris raged, his voice swelling with insane grandeur. "I will build a better world upon the ashes of the old one!"
Aris flicked his wrist. The steam-armored soldiers opened fire.
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!
Heavy iron slugs tore through the air. But as the bullets entered the fractured temporal field around the dais, their speed dropped dramatically. The lead rounds slowed down to a crawl, hanging suspended in the air like dark, metallic hornets inches from Evelyn’s chest.
"The gradient is protecting us!" Silas yelled, grabbing a heavy brass hand-wheel on the main console. "Julian! The secondary purge valve requires two Master Mechanics to operate simultaneously! The temporal feedback will kill a single man!"
Julian looked at his father, then down at his own hands— hands that had spent a lifetime fixing delicate clockwork mechanisms for this exact moment.
"I am ready, Father," Julian said.
"Aris is moving!" Evelyn warned.
Lord Aris, ignoring the slow-moving bullets hanging in the air, threw off his heavy navy cloak and activated an Aetherial harness strapped to his chest. A blinding violet forcefield enveloped his body, allowing him to cut through the distorted time-gradient like a ship cutting through rough waves.

He charged up the granite steps of the dais, his ivory cane raised like a sword, aiming straight for Silas’s throat.
"The Key, Silas!" Aris screamed, his silver mask inches away. "GIVE ME THE KEY!"
