Chapter 17 - THE CONVERGENCE

The golden light radiating from the sealed Primal Core Node did not merely thaw the frost atop the Silent Ridge; it rippled outward like a tidal wave of warm sunlight across the shattered geography of Blackwood. Down in the Sunken District, ancient boilers sputtered to life, their rusted pressure valves turning smoothly as fifty years of stagnant time dissolved into the crisp mountain morning.

Yet, as Julian pulled himself up with the help of his father and Evelyn, the ground beneath the Great Mainspring Engine gave a terrifying, shuddering lurch.

THUMMM-THUMMM-THUMMM.

Deep within the stone bedrock, a heavy, rhythmic pounding began to echo. It was not the organic thrum of the ley-lines, nor was it the smooth tick-tock of the newly aligned escapement wheel. It was the brutal, unyielding slam of heavy iron pistons—the unmistakable signature of a high-pressure military furnace.

"The secondary converter..." Silas whispered, his face going pale as he leaned over the brass handrail of the engine platform to look back toward the distant city skyline. "The temporal loop at the Citadel... it didn't destroy Arthur's machine. It only delayed the kinetic discharge!"

From the ruins of the High District, miles to the south, the static violet dome that had encased the Iron Citadel suddenly fractured into a million crystalline shards. A blinding beam of deep crimson energy shot straight up into the clear morning sky, bending at a sharp ninety-degree angle toward the Silent Ridge.

"He inverted the feedback!" Evelyn gasped, pointing at the sky. The crimson beam was tracing a bloody scar across the clouds, accelerating directly toward the Primal Core Node. "He’s using the residual energy from the Citadel implosion to force a manual override on the Great Mainspring!"

Before Julian could answer, the air twenty feet above the central engine platform ripped open with a sickening, metallic screech.

A portal of localized spatial distortion tore through the atmosphere. Stepping out from the swirling vortex of crimson smoke came the towering, war-torn silhouette of Lord Aris—no, of Arthur Vance.

His navy uniform was charred to ragged ribbons, his chest harness glowing with a volatile, unstable red flame. Half of his face was covered in severe chemical burns, but his single gray eye burned with an unholy, maniacal light that had completely severed all ties to sanity.

In his gauntleted hand, Arthur held a heavy iron breaker-sledge—a heavy tool designed for shattering mining bulkheads—and a glowing, crimson-tinted replica of the Chronos Key.

"You thought you could lock me away in a bubble of seconds, little brother?" Arthur rasped, his voice sounding like two grinding millstones. Blood trickled from his ears as the immense pressure of stepping through a forced temporal rift tore at his lungs. "You thought a few sentimental words could undo fifty years of absolute devotion to my design?"

"Arthur, stop!" Silas cried out, stepping between his two sons, his arms outstretched in desperate plea. "Look around you! The city is waking up! The people are alive! The Cataclysm is finally over if you just put down that hammer!"

"The city is a lie!" Arthur screamed, his voice echoing off the surrounding granite cliffs. "These people are ghosts of a forgotten decade! I am the only reality left in Blackwood! And I will smash this clockwork cap to pieces if I have to drag every living soul into the void with me!"

Arthur raised the heavy iron breaker-sledge high above his head, charging straight for the central Core Socket where Julian had just set the master escapement pin.

"Evelyn, the perimeter winches!" Julian roared, shoving his father behind a brass gear housing. "He's targeting the primary balance wheel!"

Evelyn drew her dagger and sprinted along the narrow catwalk toward the control levers, while Julian lunged headfirst into Arthur's path, tackling his older brother around the waist.

The two brothers slammed heavily onto the brass floorplates of the rotating engine. The iron breaker-sledge slipped from Arthur's grip, skittering across the platform and wedging itself directly between the primary drive teeth of the sixty-foot brass escapement wheel.

SCREEEEECH!

Sparks erupted in a blinding shower of orange and white as the giant clockwork mechanism seized mid-rotation. The golden light beneath the iron plates turned an angry, flickering orange.

"If I can't rule the new timeline, Julian," Arthur growled, pinning Julian against the vibrating gear housing with his gauntleted hand, his fingers crushing Julian’s windpipe, "then no one will have a timeline at all!"
