Chapter 11 - THE IRON SYNDICATE'S FORTRESS

The spatial anomaly around the granite dais shattered with a sound like snapping crystal.

As Lord Aris lunged through the distorted temporal field, his Aetherial harness spitted blinding violet arcs of lightning, burning through the temporal gradient that had slowed the Syndicate’s bullets. The suspended lead rounds instantly regained their kinetic velocity, slamming into the granite steps with a deafening roar of ricochets and flying stone dust.

"Julian, the secondary valve! NOW!" Silas shouted, his voice cracking with exertion as he threw his entire weight onto the left brass hand-wheel.

Julian didn't hesitate. He lunged across the console, his soot-stained hands catching the frozen iron spokes of the right hand-wheel. The metal was so bitterly cold from fifty years of temporal stasis that it seared through his leather gloves, but he dug his boots into the marble floorboards and pulled with all his strength.

SCREEEEECH!

The two heavy brass valves groaned in unison. Beneath their feet, deep within the foundations of the subterranean city, four massive pressure-relief vents slammed open with the force of thunder. Geysers of scalding white steam and raw, unrefined temporal ozone erupted from the floorboards around the dais, creating a impenetrable wall of roaring vapor between them and the advancing Syndicate soldiers.

"Curse you, Vance!" Lord Aris roared through the blinding white steam.

The masked tyrant reached the top of the steps, his ivory cane slashing through the vapor with terrifying speed. The glowing crystal tip struck Silas across the shoulder, sending the older scholar tumbling backward against the primary core housing.

"Father!" Julian yelled.

Aris turned his hollow, silver skull mask toward Julian. The Aetherial harness on his chest hummed at a sickeningly high frequency, distorting the air around his body into a shimmering heat-mirage.

"The watch is mine, boy!" Aris growled, extending a heavy, brass-gauntleted hand toward Julian’s throat.

Before his fingers could touch Julian, Evelyn dropped from the top of the core housing like a hunting bird. She drove her heavy iron dagger straight into the exposed copper wiring of Aris’s chest harness.

SPARK! FLASH!

A blinding discharge of blue electrical current blasted across the dais. The harness erupted in sparks, its localized forcefield collapsing instantly. Aris shrieked in rage and pain as the residual kinetic shockwave threw him backward, his heavy boots sliding fifteen feet down the soot-covered granite steps.

"The purge sequence has started!" Evelyn shouted, her hand bleeding where the electrical backlash had scorched her skin. "We have to seal the main pressure chamber before the core vents completely!"

"It's too late for a simple purge!" Silas rasped, coughing blood as he pulled himself up using the console edge. His eyes were wide with terror as he stared at the primary diagnostic gauges. "Look at the primary pressure readings! Aris didn't just charge the auxiliary coils—he linked the main engine directly to the central power grid of the Iron Syndicate's Fortress on the surface!"

Julian looked at the illuminated copper map on the main dashboard. A glowing red line ran from the subterranean vault, straight up through two miles of solid rock, terminating directly beneath the Iron Citadel—the towering, armored fortress that dominated the skyline of Blackwood’s High District.

"He isn't trying to trigger the impact down here," Julian realized, his stomach dropping like lead. "This vault is just the fuel tank. The actual firing array... the secondary converter... is mounted on the roof of his fortress!"

"If the core energy reaches the surface array, the temporal shockwave won't bleed off harmlessly," Silas warned, his hands trembling as he tried to jam an emergency override pin into the central gear array. "It will focus the energy into a concentrated beam, firing directly into the atmosphere! It will rewrite the history of the entire northern hemisphere!"

Down at the base of the dais, Lord Aris tore the smoking remnants of the wrecked harness from his chest. His silver skull mask was cracked down the center, exposing a single, pale, bloodshot eye filled with murderous fanaticism.

"Regroup at the Citadel!" Aris screamed to his surviving steam-armored soldiers, his voice raw and ragged. "Initiate the sequence from the upper deck! Lock down the lower shafts! Let these scholars drown in their own steam!"

Aris slammed his hand onto a red emergency lever mounted on the wall behind him.

CLANG-CLANG-CLANG!

Heavy iron blast doors began to drop from the vaulted ceiling of the underground city, sealing off every tunnel, every staircase, and every ventilation shaft leading to the surface.

"He's locking us in!" Evelyn cried, running toward the descending iron barricade near the elevator.

"Not all of us!" Julian shouted. He snatched the silver pocket watch from the console tray, its three copper rings spinning wildly as it absorbed the feedback from the purging engine. He ran to the central hydraulic control line, grabbed a heavy iron pry-bar, and jammed it straight into the gears of the primary blast door.

The heavy steel door slammed down onto the iron bar with a bone-crushing CRUNCH, stalling two feet above the floorboards—leaving a narrow, crawling gap leading to the express pneumatic supply tube.

"Silas! Evelyn! Through the gap!" Julian ordered.

Silas hesitated, looking back at the forty-foot brass sphere that had consumed fifty years of his life. "Julian... if we abandon the engine controls now—"

"The engine is just metal and glass, Father!" Julian said fiercely, grabbing his father's arm and hauling him toward the opening. "You gave me fifty years of your life back tonight! I am not letting you die in this hole!"

They scrambled on their bellies through the narrow gap beneath the crushed blast door, dragging their tool packs and the leather journal behind them, just as the heavy iron gears above snapped and the blast door slammed down permanently behind them, sealing the Phantom Engine into the dark depths forever.

They found themselves inside the small, cylindrical loading bay of the Old Royal Pneumatic Line—a high-speed, pressurized brass shuttle tube designed to carry urgent scientific samples directly from the subterranean deep vault to the High District Fortress above.

"The shuttle is still pressurized!" Evelyn said, peering through the glass window of the bullet-shaped copper carriage sitting on the iron rails.

"Set the destination dial for the Citadel’s lower boiler room," Silas instructed, his hands moving over the ancient brass switches with practiced muscle memory. "It was built to bypass all surface checkpoints. If the steam pressure holds, it will shoot us straight into the heart of Aris's fortress in less than two minutes."

Julian climbed into the cramped copper carriage, helping his father into the rear leather seat while Evelyn locked the heavy glass hatch from the inside.

Outside the window, through the dark tunnels of the subterranean facility, they could hear the terrifying, rising thrum of the Master Aetherial Core. The energy was surging up the heavy copper lines, racing toward the surface like a bolt of subterranean lightning.

Julian reached out, his hand wrapping around the main pneumatic release valve. He looked at Evelyn, then at his father.

"Next stop," Julian said, his eyes burning with quiet determination, "The High District."

He pulled the lever.

With a sickening surge of acceleration that slammed them back into their leather seats, the copper shuttle vanished into the dark pneumatic pipe at two hundred miles an hour.
