Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The impact against the wall knocked the wind out of me. Before Croft could grab me again, my adrenaline surged. I drove my elbow hard into his ribs. He grunted, taking a step back, and I used the moment to shove him back into the dining room table, sending crystal wine glasses shattering across the floorboards.
"Mark, stop it!" Sarah screamed from behind him.
Croft recovered quickly, his face darkening with rage. He lunged at me, grabbing my arms and pinning me against the front door. "You made a big mistake, architect," he growled in my ear.
Suddenly, the front door behind us slammed open with immense force, sending Croft stumbling forward.
Two uniformed Chicago police officers burst into the foyer, guns drawn and pointed straight at Croft.
"POLICE! STEP AWAY FROM HIM! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!" shouted a senior officer.
Behind the officers stood my business partner, David, his face pale with anxiety. "I called them, Mark! You told me yesterday something was wrong, and when you didn't answer your phone, I drove over!"
Croft slowly raised his hands in the air, his calm demeanor returning instantly. "Officers, this is a domestic misunderstanding. I am Mrs. Vance's personal security officer."
"On the ground! Now!" the lead officer commanded. Croft complied smoothly, dropping to his knees.
Sarah stepped forward, her voice instantly transforming into a breathy, frantic sob. "Officer! Thank God you're here! My husband... he lost his mind! He attacked my mother-in-law yesterday, and now he's attacking my security guard! He's unstable! Look at my stomach, I'm seven months pregnant and I'm terrified for my life!"
I stared at her in utter disbelief. Her ability to switch emotions in a microsecond was terrifying. She looked like a weeping, fragile victim, clutching her belly with trembling hands.
"Officer, she's lying," I said, holding my hands up peacefully. "My name is Mark Vance. I own this house. My wife physically assaulted my mother yesterday—there is a medical report filed by Dr. Julian Ross. Furthermore, she is currently attempting to flee the country with stolen assets."
Vertical confusion swept over the two officers' faces. The lead officer looked between Sarah's tears, Croft on the floor, and me.
"Alright, nobody move," the lead officer said, stepping into the hallway. "We need to get to the bottom of this. Who called 911?"
"I did," David spoke up from the porch. "I'm Mark's business partner. I heard loud crashing and yelling from the driveway."
"Officer," Sarah sobbed, stepping toward the lead policeman. "My husband has been having a nervous breakdown due to financial stress. He brought his senile mother into our home, and when she got confused and fell, he blamed me! Now he's holding me hostage in my own home!"
"That's a complete lie!" I shouted. "Officer, check her luggage in the hallway! She has legal documents and offshore bank records in a locked box in the kitchen! She's preparing to fly out on a private charter today!"
The secondary officer walked over to the stack of suitcases in the hall and noticed a heavy leather briefcase sitting on top, unzipped. He peered inside and pulled out a stack of passports.
"Ma'am," the officer asked, turning to Sarah. "Why do you have three different foreign passports with your picture on them under different names?"
Sarah's breath hitched. Her tearful act froze instantly.
"I... those are old legal identification documents for international corporate consulting," Sarah stuttered, her voice losing its innocent quiver.
"Three diplomatic passports from Dominica, Cyprus, and Switzerland?" the officer asked, stepping closer. "All issued under alias names?"
I looked at Sarah, feeling a cold rush of triumph. The web of lies was unraveling right in front of the authorities.
"Officers," I said clearly. "My lawyer, Arthur Pendelton, is currently at the Federal District Court filing an emergency injunction against my wife for wire fraud and asset concealment involving my father's estate. The FBI is already looking into her father's syndicate."
At the mention of the FBI, Croft—still on the floor—looked up at Sarah with a sharp, warning glare. "Sarah, say nothing else without counsel present."
Sarah's face turned completely white. The delicate act was dead. She looked at me with pure, unadulterated venom.
"You think you've won, Mark?" she spat, her voice dropping into a dark, icy tone that startled the officers. "You think you can take my money and my son away from me?"
"Ma'am, keep your voice down," the lead officer warned, pulling out his handcuffs. "We're going to need everyone to come down to the station to sort this out."

Suddenly, Sarah gasped loudly, clutching her lower abdomen with both hands. She doubled over, a sharp scream of agony ripping from her throat.
"Aaaagh! My stomach!" she screamed, falling onto her side onto the hardwood floor. "The baby! Mark... something's wrong with the baby!"
