Chapter 8 - The Hospital Vigil

The next hour was a blur of flashing red lights, blaring sirens, and total chaos.
Sarah was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in an ambulance, with a police escort following closely behind. Despite everything she had done—the lies, the theft, the brutal attack on my mother—my heart was in my throat. My unborn son, Theodore, was inside her. If she went into premature labor at seven months due to the immense stress, his life could be in grave danger.
I sat in the sterile waiting room of the maternity ward, staring at my pale hands. David sat next to me, holding two cold cups of coffee.
"Drink some coffee, Mark," David said softly. "You look like a ghost."
"I feel like I'm living someone else's life, Dave," I whispered, resting my elbows on my knees. "The woman I spent five years with... she wasn't real. My marriage was a corporate contract designed to keep me quiet."
"You couldn't have known," David reassured me, placing a hand on my shoulder. "She was a master manipulator. But right now, you need to stay strong for your kid."
At that moment, Arthur Pendelton walked into the waiting room, accompanied by two men in tailored dark suits holding leather badges.
"Mark," Pendelton said, approaching me. "These are Special Agents Miller and Vance from the FBI Financial Crimes Division. They've been monitoring Sarah's offshore accounts for six months."
"Mr. Vance," Agent Miller said, nodding respectfully. "We've been tracking the Jenkins syndicate assets for years. When your mother uncovered those original liquidation documents yesterday, it gave Mr. Pendelton the ground to trigger a formal federal audit. We just served an emergency freeze on all of Sarah's domestic and offshore accounts."
"Is she going to be arrested?" I asked.
"As soon as she is medically cleared by the hospital, she will be taken into federal custody," Agent Vance confirmed. "Her diplomatic passports were illegal, and her attempt to wire forty million dollars out of the country violates multiple federal banking laws."
Before I could digest the news, the double doors of the ICU opened, and Dr. Elizabeth Chen, Sarah's obstetrician, walked out wearing green scrubs. She looked exhausted and grim.
I stood up immediately. "Dr. Chen! How is she? How is the baby?"
Dr. Chen pulled off her mask and looked at me with deep sympathy. "Mark... Sarah experienced acute placental abruption caused by extreme physical stress and elevated blood pressure. We had no choice. We had to perform an emergency C-section to save the child."
My heart stopped. "Is... is he alive?"
"Your son was born thirty minutes ago," Dr. Chen said, a tiny smile softening her weary face. "He weighs four pounds, two ounces. He's very small, and his lungs aren't fully developed yet, so he is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on a ventilator. But Mark... he is a fighter. He is stable."
Tears spilled over my eyes—tears of sheer relief and overwhelming emotion. "Can I see him?"
"Yes, you can," Dr. Chen nodded. "You can go into the NICU now."
"What about Sarah?" I asked, my voice trembling.
Dr. Chen's smile faded. "Sarah is out of surgery and conscious in recovery. However... while running pre-op blood panels for the emergency surgery, our lab uncovered something unusual in her medical records."
"Unusual?" I frowned. "What do you mean?"
Dr. Chen glanced at the FBI agents, then back at me. "Mark... six years ago, Sarah underwent a major surgical procedure at a private clinic in Switzerland. A procedure that left severe uterine scarring."
"What kind of procedure?" I asked, my blood running cold with a fresh sense of dread.
Dr. Chen took a deep breath. "Mark... biologically speaking, based on her medical history... it is medically impossible for Sarah to have carried a child to term naturally."

The floor seemed to tilt beneath my feet. "What... what are you saying, Doctor?"
"I'm saying," Dr. Chen revealed softly, "that Sarah was using high-dose hormonal supplements and specialized prosthetic padding to fake her pregnancy up until two months ago... when she hired a surrogate. But the child born today... Mark, we need to run a DNA test immediately. Because Sarah may not be the biological mother of that baby."
