Chapter 9 - The DNA Secret

The universe shattered into a million jagged pieces once again.
I stood paralyzed in the hospital corridor, my mind reeling. Sarah had faked her pregnancy? A surrogate? None of it made any logical sense. I had felt her belly bump! I had watched her body change over the past seven months!
"Doctor, that's impossible," I stammered, my head spinning. "I touched her stomach! I felt the baby kick!"
"Mark," Dr. Chen explained gently, leading me toward a private consultation room away from the hallway. "Modern medical prosthetics combined with controlled hormone therapy can simulate physical pregnancy symptoms with terrifying accuracy—including localized muscle twitches that mimic fetal movement. Sarah was receiving weekly hormone injections from an uncredentialed private clinic in town. We found the prescription records in her emergency intake file."
"Why?" I gasped, sinking into a chair. "Why would she fake a pregnancy?"
"To anchor you to her," Agent Miller spoke up from the doorway, his voice grave. "Think about it, Mr. Vance. Six months ago, federal auditors began quietly poking around her father's old company. Sarah knew the walls were closing in. She needed an ironclad way to keep you from divorcing her or questioning her finances if you ever found out about her past. A baby—a son—was her ultimate leverage."
"Where is the baby right now?" I demanded, standing up abruptly.
"He's in the NICU, Incubator 4," Dr. Chen said. "And Mark... regardless of Sarah's deceit, you need to see him. We've drawn a cheek swab from the child for an expedited DNA paternity test to confirm if you are the biological father."
"I want to see him now," I said.
Dr. Chen guided me through the sterile glass doors of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The room was quiet, filled with the rhythmic beeping of heart monitors and the soft hum of medical machinery.
We stopped in front of Incubator 4.
Inside the small clear box lay a tiny, fragile boy. He had a patch of dark hair, long delicate fingers, and small monitors attached to his tiny chest. He looked so vulnerable, so innocent, floating in a sea of medical tubes.
I reached through the side ports of the incubator and gently rested my finger against his tiny palm. Instantly, his tiny hand curled around my index finger, holding on with surprising strength.
Tears streamed down my face. Looking into his tiny face, I didn't care about legal documents, stolen patents, or corporate conspiracies. In that moment, looking at this precious soul fighting for every breath, I knew in my heart that he was my son.
"Hey there, little guy," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I'm here. Daddy's right here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
Thirty-six agonizing hours passed. I refused to leave the NICU, sleeping in an armchair next to Incubator 4, listening to the steady beat of my son's heart. My mother, escorted by David, visited the ward, weeping tears of sweet joy as she looked through the glass at her grandson.
On the morning of the second day, Dr. Chen walked into the NICU holding a sealed white envelope.
"The expedited DNA results are back from the lab, Mark," she said quietly.
My hands shook as I took the envelope. I tore it open and scanned the medical jargon until my eyes reached the bottom line:
Probability of Paternity (Mark Vance): 99.99%
Probability of Maternity (Sarah Jenkins): 0.00%
I stared at the paper. I was definitely the biological father. But Sarah was not his biological mother.
"How?" I looked up at Dr. Chen, bewildered. "If I'm the father... who is the mother?"
"We cross-referenced the embryo creation records from the private fertility clinic in Chicago where Sarah had the procedure done," Dr. Chen revealed, her expression solemn. "Mark... five years ago, right after you married Sarah, you both completed a routine fertility screening, correct?"
"Yes," I remembered. "Sarah told me the clinic destroyed our samples because we decided to wait on having children."
"They didn't destroy them," Dr. Chen said softly. "Sarah secretly paid the clinic to fertilize your sample with an anonymous donor egg from an elite ivy-league donor agency, froze the viable embryos, and hired an under-the-table surrogate in Indiana three months ago. When the surrogate went into early labor last week due to complications, Sarah had the baby secretly transferred to this hospital under her own name—planning to pass the child off as her own delivery!"
The sheer magnitude of Sarah's psychotic planning was breathtaking. She had systematically manufactured a child using my DNA, hired a secret surrogate, and staged a fake pregnancy—all to construct a perfect, unbreakable trap around me.

"Where is Sarah now?" I asked, a cold, unwavering fury settling in my chest.
"She's awake in Room 402," Dr. Chen said. "And the FBI is waiting to arrest her the moment you walk out of that room."
