Chapter 12 - Reconnecting with an Old Asset

We found shelter in an abandoned, subterranean utility maintenance tunnel beneath the historical district of Georgetown—a relic of old Civil War-era drainage systems that doubled as a blind spot for modern surveillance cameras. I settled my mother onto a dry pallet of wool blankets, handing her a bottle of water and a protein bar while I hooked my secure tactical terminal into an old copper-wire telegraph junction box, tapping directly into the city’s underground fiber-optic trunk line.

Using a secure, encrypted one-time-pad cipher, I transmitted a single ping to a private terminal registered to Colonel Thomas Sterling at his secure residence in Alexandria, Virginia.

Within ten minutes, my phone vibrated. A coordinate and a time: *The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Midnight. Come alone.*

At 11:45 PM, I left my mother resting securely in the subterranean tunnel, slipping out into the chilly D.C. night air like a shadow. The monuments towered ghost-like against the ink-black sky, illuminated by harsh floodlights that cast long, dramatic shadows across the marble steps.

Colonel Sterling was standing near the edge of the reflecting pool, his hands buried deep in the pockets of a dark wool overcoat, his breath pluming white in the crisp autumn air. As I approached from behind the stone pillars, he didn't turn around, keeping his eyes fixed on the illuminated statue of Abraham Lincoln in the distance.

"You're a hard man to find, Ethan," Sterling said quietly as I stepped up beside him. "The FBI has your face plastered across every internal security watchlist in the federal government. You’re classified as a rogue intelligence asset."

"I’m the only asset left doing his job, Colonel," I replied, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with him. "Senator Vance’s machine is trying to bury us because we caught them red-handed stripping my mother’s home and assets. You knew about Apex Heritage, didn't you?"

Sterling let out a long, weary sigh, his breath catching in the night air. He turned his head slowly, looking me dead in the eye. "I knew it existed as a black-budget funding conduit for clandestine operations back during the height of the Middle East deployments. But I didn't know they were targeting domestic families—let alone your mother."

"Well, now you know," I said, pulling the tactical flash drive from my pocket and holding it out toward him. "This drive contains the unredacted proof linking Senator Vance directly to the syndicate. It’s set on a dead-man’s switch. If I’m arrested or terminated within the next twelve hours, the entire archive drops into the public domain simultaneously."

Sterling stared at the small metal drive in my palm as if it were a live grenade with the pin pulled. "And what do you expect me to do with this, Ethan? Walk into the Capitol building and hand it to the Attorney General? Half the Justice Department is in Vance’s pocket."

"I don't expect you to hand it to the DOJ," I said, stepping closer, my voice cold and resolute. "I expect you to help me get inside the Senator’s upcoming private campaign fundraiser tomorrow night at the Willard Hotel. That’s where he’s hosting his top-tier institutional donors—including the corporate executives who funded Apex Heritage."

Sterling stared at me in stunned disbelief. "You're planning to crash a high-security political fundraiser attended by Secret Service agents, cabinet ministers, and private security details? That’s not an operation, Ethan. That’s a suicide mission."

"It’s the only place where he won't be hiding behind lawyers and injunctions," I replied, sliding the flash drive back into my pocket. "He’ll be standing on a stage, looking the elite donors in the eye, basking in his own arrogance. And that’s when I’m going to make sure he hears the truth."
