Chapter 7 - The Shadowy Benefactor

Leaving the police station, the midday heat hit me like a wall. My phone buzzed persistently in my pocket—not a text message this time, but a direct encrypted satellite voice call routed through a secure military frequency.
I ducked into the shadow of the concrete exit ramp, tapping the accept icon.
"Vance," a deep, gravelly voice barked through the earpiece. It wasn't an automated bot or a burner number. It belonged to Colonel Thomas Sterling, my former commanding officer in Joint Special Operations Command, currently retired and working as a private security consultant for high-net-worth defense contractors in Washington, D.C.
"Colonel. I didn't expect you to monitor my personal communications," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on the parking lot entrance.
"I don't monitor personal communications, Ethan. I monitor intelligence chatter, and right now, your name is lighting up every secure server between the Pentagon and Langley," Sterling said bluntly. "What the hell are you doing messing with Apex Heritage Management?"
I narrowed my eyes. "Apex tried to steal my family home, institutionalize my mother under false pretenses, and liquidate her assets through an illegal real estate syndicate. You expect me to just let them walk?"
"I expect you to understand the perimeter of the battlefield before you charge into a minefield," Sterling snapped back, his tone brooking zero argument. "Apex Heritage isn't just some local real estate scam run by a couple of crooked doctors and a grifter wife. It’s a front organization tied directly to international shell companies that finance illegal arms procurement and private intelligence operations. When you hit Dr. Keller and seized those files, you tripped a dead-man’s switch across three continents."
A cold spike of adrenaline pierced my chest. "Explain."
"Half an hour after you walked into that police station, the federal database containing your mother’s forged property deeds was wiped clean remotely by an offshore server in Zurich," Sterling said grimly. "Furthermore, the local sheriff’s department received an anonymous tip claiming *you* were the one who forged the documents to commit insurance fraud against your wife. The local district attorney is already reviewing an emergency injunction to release Vanessa."
I gripped my phone so hard my knuckles turned white. "They're moving fast."
"Because you rattled the cage of people who don't exist on paper," Sterling warned. "Listen to me, Ethan. Get your mother out of that hospital immediately. Take her off the grid. Do not trust the local police, do not trust the regional courts, and for God's sake, do not stay at your house tonight."
Before I could answer, the call disconnected with a sharp, electronic click.
I didn't hesitate. I sprinted across the asphalt toward my truck, my military training kicking into overdrive. If the local legal system was already being compromised from the top down by Apex Heritage’s shadow network, my mother was no longer safe in a public medical facility.

As I pulled out of the sheriff department’s parking lot and accelerated toward St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital across town, a black, unmarked SUV slid out from an alleyway three car lengths behind me, maintaining a disciplined, military-grade trailing distance.
The hunt was officially on, and this time, the battlefield was my own hometown.
