Chapter 19 - The Final Debriefing

The living room of our house was illuminated by the harsh, flickering strobe of emergency vehicle lights flashing through the broken front window. Federal investigators, forensics teams, and tactical marshals moved through the rooms with quiet, methodical efficiency, bagging evidence, collecting spent shell casings, and escorting the three captured ghost operatives out in heavy steel restraints.

Colonel Sterling stood by the fireplace, sipping a cup of black coffee I had handed him, watching the forensic team dust for latent fingerprints near the shattered window.

"You set a trap for them, Ethan," Sterling said quietly, looking over at me as I adjusted the straps of my tactical vest. "You knew they would come the moment the federal indictments against Senator Vance reached the discovery phase."

"When you leave loose ends in military intelligence, the enemy always tries to snip them before the tribunal begins," I replied, leaning against the mantelpiece. "These operatives weren't rogue actors. They belonged to the executive-action black-ops wing tied directly to Vance’s intelligence oversight committee."

"And now they're in federal custody, singing like canaries," Sterling sighed, running a hand over his silver hair. "The Department of Justice has officially classified the entire syndicate operation under permanent national security seal. The public will never know the full extent of the corruption, but the leadership has been permanently neutralized. Senator Vance will spend the rest of his natural life inside a maximum-security federal penitentiary where no amount of political influence can touch him."

"And Vanessa?" I asked.

"Twenty-five years without parole," Sterling said flatly. "She tried to cut a deal by throwing everyone under the bus, but her testimony was deemed tainted by her own perjury. She’ll be forgotten in a federal cell before the winter snow melts."

I nodded slowly, looking down the hallway toward my mother’s bedroom door. It was cracked open an inch, and through the gap, I could see Martha sitting beside my mother, reading a book aloud while the old woman slept peacefully, completely undisturbed by the chaos that had just played out in the living room.

"What are your orders now, Captain Vance?" Sterling asked, studying my face with searching intensity. "The Pentagon wants you back on active duty. They need tactical analysts who can see through the political fog and root out corruption at the highest levels."

I looked at my service sidearm resting on the dining table, then back out the broken front window toward the quiet, sleeping mountains rising against the dawn sky.

"Tell them my deployment is officially over, Colonel," I said, my voice steady and resolute. "I’ve finally come home."
