Chapter 11 - Perjury and Panic

Detective Miller took the witness stand with calm, methodical precision, placing his hand on the Bible and swearing to tell the truth.

Under Marcus’s skilled questioning, Miller walked the court through the technical recovery of the cloud-mirrored video file. He explained how the camera’s hardware serial number matched the wreckage recovered from the Vance household trash bin during a subsequent search warrant execution.

“And what about the audio enhancement, Detective?” Marcus asked, pacing slowly before the jury box.

“We ran acoustic spectrum analysis,” Miller testified, pointing to a diagram on the court easel. “Not only did we isolate the sound of the boiling liquid and the victim’s screams, but we also amplified background chatter between Mr. Julian Vance and Mrs. Diane Vance plotting how to coerce the signature before emergency services arrived.”

Julian’s attorney tried a weak cross-examination, attempting to question the chain of custody, but Miller effortlessly dismantled every objection with ironclad documentation and federal certification stamps.

Then Marcus dropped the second bombshell.

“Your Honor, we submit Exhibit B: certified banking records from First Continental Bank detailing the systematic embezzlement of funds from Sterling Construction Corporation—the company founded by Clara Vance’s late father—into private offshore accounts controlled exclusively by Julian Vance.”

Diane gasped, half-rising from her seat at the defense table before her lawyer yanked her back down by her coat tail.

“Over three million dollars,” Marcus continued, reading from the certified audit report. “Drained over eighteen months while Mr. Vance used forged corporate resolutions. When the company accountant threatened an audit, Mr. Vance needed absolute control of the real estate assets to cover the shortfall. Hence, the attempt to force his pregnant wife to sign away her inheritance at knife—or rather, boiling pot—point.”

Judge Harris turned her piercing gaze toward Diane. “Mrs. Diane Vance, you were present during this entire incident according to the audio record. Do you wish to take the stand and testify under oath, or would you prefer your counsel to speak for you?”

Diane’s face lost every trace of its haughty arrogance. She looked older, smaller, and trapped. She whispered frantically into her lawyer’s ear, but even her high-priced attorney shook his head slowly, knowing the walls had completely collapsed.

“The defense calls no further witnesses at this time, Your Honor,” the defense attorney muttered, waving a white flag in open court.
