Chapter 9 - The Prosecution's Opening Salvo

Judge Eleanor Harris settled into her high-backed leather chair, her sharp, intelligent eyes sweeping over the courtroom before resting squarely on the defense table, then shifting to me and my baby.

“We are here for Case Number 884-CV-Sterling versus Vance,” Judge Harris announced, her voice resonant and commanding. “Before we address the civil property disputes, the court takes notice of the criminal addendum filed this morning regarding attempted murder, evidence destruction, and financial conspiracy. Mr. Marcus, you have the floor for the prosecution.”

Marcus Vance stood up, buttoning his jacket, and walked calmly toward the center well of the courtroom.

“Thank you, Your Honor,” Marcus began, his voice carrying effortlessly into every corner of the room. “Six months ago, the defendant Julian Vance and his mother Diane Vance orchestrated a brutal assault against an eight-month-pregnant woman in her own kitchen. They attempted to murder her by shoving her into a boiling stockpot of broth to force her signature on a forged real estate transfer deed.”

An audible wave of shock rippled through the gallery. Several reporters began furiously typing on their laptops.

Julian’s lead attorney leaped to his feet. “Objection, Your Honor! Inflammatory rhetoric unsupported by physical evidence. The initial police report filed on the night of the incident clearly documented an accidental slip!”

“Sit down, counsel,” Judge Harris commanded coldly without missing a beat. “Mr. Marcus is outlining his opening statement. He hasn’t even introduced the exhibits yet. Proceed, Mr. Marcus.”

“Thank you, Your Honor,” Marcus replied smoothly. “The defense relies heavily on a police report that was manipulated under duress while my client was recovering from severe second-degree burns. But tyrants always make one fatal mistake: they forget that modern technology remembers what human malice tries to erase.”

Marcus turned toward the digital evidence monitors positioned at the front of the courtroom.

“Your Honor, the prosecution submits Exhibit A: a high-definition, unedited security recording captured by an IP camera mounted above the pantry of the Vance residence on the night of August 14th.”

Julian went completely rigid. His hands gripped the edge of the mahogany defense table so tightly his knuckles turned blue. Diane hissed something under her breath, grabbing Julian’s arm.

“Play the footage,” Judge Harris ordered.

The large monitors flickered to life. The courtroom fell into absolute, breathless silence as the damning video began to roll across the screen.
