Chapter 12 - The Verdict of Fire and Steel

Judge Harris did not retire to her chambers to deliberate. The evidence was so overwhelming, unassailable, and viciously documented that deliberation was an insult to justice.

She folded her hands on the bench, leaning forward slightly as her eyes scanned the courtroom before locking onto Julian and Diane.

“In my twenty-five years on the bench,” Judge Harris began, her voice ringing with icy authority, “I have presided over countless disputes, but I rarely encounter human depravity of this specific magnitude. To attempt to murder your own pregnant wife—the mother of your unborn child—by scalding her with boiling liquid simply to seize real estate assets you have systematically embezzled... is an act of unmitigated barbarism.”

Julian stared straight ahead, his face pale as marble, sweat beading on his forehead.

“On the criminal referrals,” Judge Harris continued, “I hereby order the immediate revocation of bail for Julian Vance and Diane Vance. Both defendants are remanded into custody pending trial for attempted second-degree murder, domestic violence resulting in severe bodily injury, evidence destruction, and corporate fraud.”

Bang! The gavel struck the wood like a thunderclap.

“No! Wait!” Julian shouted, lunging forward as two armed bailiffs stepped up behind him and grabbed his arms, clamping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. “Clara! Please! We have a child! Don’t do this!”

I didn't flinch. I sat quietly at the plaintiff's table, cradling baby Clara against my chest, looking straight into the eyes of the man who had tried to boil me alive.

“You should have thought of that when you pushed me toward the stove, Julian,” I said softly, loud enough for him to hear across the silent courtroom.

Diane shrieked as the second set of handcuffs clicked around her slender wrists, her designer Chanel coat rustling frantically as deputies hoisted her to her feet and led her away toward the holding cells behind the courtroom.

Flashbulbs erupted from the media gallery as the once-untouchable mother-son duo was frog-marched out in disgrace, their empire reduced to ash in less than two hours.
