CHAPTER 7: THE FROST OF THE NECROMANCERS

Part 1: Dawn on the Red-Clay Shore
The makeshift raft of seal-hide and southern oak scraped against the wet, red clay of the mainland shoreline just as the first grey light of dawn broke over the canopy. Behind them lay the endless, terrifying expanse of the southern ocean—a dark mirror that had held them captive for weeks. Ahead of them rose the ancient, towering forests of the southern continent, a dense wall of colossal redwoods and weeping ferns draped in thick, humid mists.
Tristan stepped off the raft first, his boots sinking into the soft mud. He was no longer the carefree young kinsman of the Grand Canyon; ten years of harsh polar survival had hardened his frame and etched quiet vigilance into the lines around his eyes. He reached back, helping Nalin step onto the shore. Though pale from the grueling voyage, her eyes sparked with the fierce, untamed energy of the Eagle Tribe.
"We made it, Tristan," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she looked at the towering green canopy. "We are finally home."
"Not yet, my love," Tristan replied softly, his hand resting instinctively on the worn hilt of his steel sword. "We are on the mainland, but we are far from the safety of the Canyon. The Castile Empire has eyes everywhere, and the native factions have not forgotten Leon's deeds."
Ten-year-old Kaelen leaped off the raft next, his bare feet gripping the red clay with effortless ease. He looked around in absolute wonder. Having spent his entire life on a barren island of black ash and white glaciers, the sheer explosion of green, the smell of damp earth, and the warm, heavy air of the jungle felt like stepping into another realm.
"Is this the mainland, Father?" Kaelen asked, his eyes wide. "It is so... warm. And the trees are so tall."
"Yes, Kaelen," Tristan said, a rare, warm smile softening his rugged features. "This is the land of your ancestors. But remember your promise to your Uncle Leon. No matter who we meet, you must never speak of—"
Before Tristan could finish his sentence, the ambient warmth of the jungle vanished in a heartbeat.

The chirping of the jungle birds silenced instantly. The humid air turned deathly cold, condensing into thick, icy plumes with every breath they took. From the grey sky above, black, frost-bitten leaves began to fall, turning brittle and shattering like glass as they touched the frozen ground. A suffocating, necrotic pressure descended upon the beach, heavy enough to make Kaelen gasp for breath.
"A dark barrier..." Nalin hissed, her hands immediately crackling with defensive sparks of blue lightning. "Tristan, they were waiting for us."
Out from the shadows of the colossal redwoods, two withered, skeletal figures emerged. They wore long, tattered black robes embroidered with the jagged, silver-frozen skull crest of the Castile Inquisition. The first warlock, the Stag-Lord, wore a crown of blackened, frozen antlers. The second, the Heron-Sage, leaned on a tall staff carved from the leg-bone of a giant marsh bird.
These were the Twin Frost Warlocks, the deadliest inquisitors under the command of the Castile Governor-General.
"Hehehe, Tristan... Nalin..." the Stag-Lord cackled, his voice sounding like dry bones scraping against a frozen grave. "Did you truly believe you could vanish into the southern mists forever? The shadow of the Empire reaches even the ends of the earth."
"Tell us where Leon hides," the Heron-Sage demanded, his voice a cold, whispering wind. "Hand over the location of the Dragon’s Fang, and perhaps we will let your half-breed child die quickly."
Part 2: The Strike of the Frozen Bone
"You will touch my son over my dead body!" Nalin roared.
With a fierce cry, she thrust her hands forward. A violent, crackling lance of brilliant blue lightning tore through the icy fog, aiming straight for the Stag-Lord’s throat.

The Heron-Sage merely smiled, a sickening display of rotted teeth. He slammed his bone staff onto the frozen mud. A massive wall of pale-green, sickly frost erupted from the earth, meeting Nalin’s lightning head-on. The magic clashed with a deafening screech, but the unnatural frost was too dense; it absorbed the electrical energy, freezing the lightning solid mid-air before shattering it into glittering, harmless fragments of blue ice.
"Your lightning is weak, girl of the Eagle Tribe," the Heron-Sage sneered. "It lacks the warmth of the true Sun."
"Kaelen, run into the forest! Do not look back!" Tristan shouted, drawing his steel sword.
With a burst of speed, Tristan lunged forward. He did not strike with brute force; instead, he executed the soft, flowing wind-deflections of the Grand Canyon. His blade spun in a silver blur, creating a localized gale that dispersed the freezing fog and forced the Twin Warlocks to step back. Tristan’s sword clashed against the Heron-Sage's bone staff, the impact ringing out like a cracked bell.
"Obstinate fools," the Stag-Lord muttered.
Moving with unnatural, ghostly speed, the Stag-Lord vanished from Tristan’s line of sight, reappearing directly in front of the fleeing Kaelen.
"Kaelen! No!" Nalin screamed, throwing herself forward to intercept, but a blast of freezing wind from the Heron-Sage knocked her off her feet, pinning her to the icy ground.
Kaelen froze, staring up at the terrifying, antlered warlock. Despite his fear, the boy remembered his training. He planted his bare feet into the frozen mud, raised his arms, and tried to summon the kinetic gravity-weight Uncle Leon had taught him.
"A brave little beast," the Stag-Lord whispered, his eyes glowing with a cold, pale-blue flame. "But your blood is already freezing."
The warlock’s withered hand, coated in a thick layer of necrotic, black ice, struck Kaelen square in the chest.
BOOM!
The impact did not break Kaelen's ribs, but it delivered a devastating, localized burst of pure, corrupted necro-frost—The Frozen Bone Strike. The dark, freezing magic bypassed Kaelen's physical defenses, rushing straight into his meridians and wrapping around his heart like iron claws.
Kaelen let out a choked, silent cry, his eyes rolling back as his warm skin instantly turned a terrifying, pale shade of blue. He collapsed onto the frozen clay, shivering violently as frost began to spread across his eyelashes.

"KAELEN!" Tristan’s heart shattered at the sight.
Unleashing a desperate, wild surge of kinetic energy, Tristan threw his sword forward. The blade spun like a gale-force throwing-axe, slicing the air and forcing the Stag-Lord to leap back to avoid decapitation.

Nalin, fueled by motherly fury, summoned every ounce of her remaining strength. She unleashed a massive, chaotic dome of lightning that exploded outward, temporarily blinding both warlocks and shattering the ice barrier around them.
Tristan did not hesitate. He scooped up Kaelen’s freezing, unconscious body in one arm, grabbed Nalin with the other, and leaped off the high mud bank into the roaring, rapid currents of the adjacent jungle river. The swift, muddy waters swallowed them whole, carrying them away into the safety of the dense, untamed wilderness, leaving the frustrated curses of the Twin Frost Warlocks echoing behind them in the frozen fog.
