Chapter 4 - The Bait and the Trap

--------------------------------

Twelve hours later, we were holed up in a secure penthouse apartment overlooking the foggy expanse of the Seattle harbor. The twins had been fed, bathed, and were currently sleeping deeply in a secure back bedroom under the watchful eye of an undercover state trooper. For the first time in nearly a year, I had changed out of my mourning clothes, donning a dark, tailored suit that felt like armor.

Elena sat at the dining table, surrounded by three high-powered military laptops. A young tech specialist from her unit, a kid named Toby, was furiously typing, his eyes wide as streams of decrypted data cascaded down his screen.

"Unbelievable," Toby muttered, pushing his glasses up his nose. "Mr. Cole, your wife was a genius. She didn't just dump their files; she created a real-time mirroring protocol. Every time the Obsidian Group moves funds through their shell companies in Panama or the Cayman Islands, it reflects right here. We're looking at over four billion dollars in illicit assets."

"Can you lock it?" I asked, standing over his shoulder, a cup of black coffee cooling in my hand.

"Lock it?" Toby chuckled nervously. "Sir, with the cryptographic keys she left, I can do more than lock it. I can execute a global freeze order. I can drain these accounts into a federal holding fund with a single keystroke. The second I hit enter, the Obsidian Group becomes entirely bankrupt."

"Don't do it yet," I ordered, my eyes narrowing. "The moment they realize they’re broke, they will kill Leo and go to ground. We need to use the money as a shield."

Elena stood up, walking over to the window. "Dan, I just got word from the interrogation team. Vanessa is singing like a canary in the county jail. She confirmed that Viktor Vance is expecting a call on her satellite phone at exactly noon today. He wants the confirmation code for the drives. If he doesn't get it, he transfers Leo to a container ship bound for international waters."

I looked at the wall clock. 11:45 AM.

"Give me the phone," I said.

"Dan, you're not an active operative anymore," Elena warned, though there was no real conviction in her voice. She knew me too well. She knew that stopping me now was an absolute impossibility.

"They killed Mara, Elena," I said, my voice terrifyingly calm. "They terrorized two little girls who are now my responsibility. I am ending this today."

At precisely twelve o'clock, the heavily encrypted satellite phone on the table began to buzz, its vibration sounding like a rattlesnake in the quiet room. I picked it up, flipped it open, and pressed it to my ear.

"Vanessa," a cold, smooth voice spoke from the other end. The accent was faintly European, dripping with aristocratic arrogance. "Tell me you have the key. I am looking at a shipping manifest, and I would hate to see your son's name removed from it."

"Vanessa is currently residing in a federal holding cell, Viktor," I said, my voice deadpan.

A long, heavy silence stretched across the line. I could hear the faint sound of harbor foghorns in the background on his end.

"Daniel Cole," Vance said, his tone shifting from arrogant to dangerously intrigued. "The grieving widower. I must admit, I didn't expect you to survive the night. Marcus and his team were supposed to clean up that mountain house."

"Marcus is dead, Viktor. Along with your other assets. And right now, I am sitting in front of your entire financial empire."

Vance let out a soft, mocking laugh. "My empire? Mr. Cole, you are a retired lawyer. You don't have the stomach for what we do. You have some data, perhaps. But data doesn't protect you from a bullet."

"I have more than data, Viktor. I have Toby," I said, gesturing to the tech kid. "Toby has his finger sitting on a button. In exactly three seconds, he is going to execute a test drain on your primary operational account in Zurich. Check your balance."

I nodded to Toby. The kid hit a key.

Two seconds later, I heard a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line, followed by the rapid clacking of a keyboard in Vance's background. When he spoke again, all the smooth aristocracy was gone. His voice was raw, shaking with absolute malice.

"You bastard. You just pulled fifty million dollars out of my clearing account."

"And I can pull the remaining three point nine billion in the next sixty seconds," I replied smoothly. "Here is how this is going to go, Viktor. You are going to bring Leo to Pier 42 in exactly two hours. You will bring him yourself, unaccompanied by a small army. You bring the boy, walked out in the open where my snipers can see him. The moment he is safely in my vehicle, I will hand you a flash drive with the restoration codes. If I see a single tactical team, if I see a single weapon raised, Toby hits enter, and you become a very dead man to your investors who no longer have their money."

"Pier 42 is abandoned," Vance hissed. "It’s a kill box."

"Precisely," I said. "That’s why I chose it. See you at two, Viktor. Don't be late. Your bank account is ticking."

I slammed the phone shut, turning to Elena. "Get the tactical teams deployed around Pier 42. But keep them hidden. Vance is a cornered animal; he’ll bring heavy heat regardless of what I told him."

Elena nodded, her face grim. "Dan, this is a massive risk. If he calls your bluff..."

"It’s not a bluff," I said, looking toward the bedroom door where Lily and Rose were sleeping. "I’m going to bring their brother home."
