Chapter 7 - The Battle for the Sky

---------------------------------

The state police helicopter tilted violently as the pilot pushed the engine to its absolute limit, racing toward the high-rise penthouse. Below us, the city lights flickered through the dissipating fog, completely oblivious to the war being waged in the skyline.

"Dan, we can't land on the roof!" Elena shouted over the comms, pointing toward the two black, unmarked helicopters hovering over the building. "Those are illegal military-grade birds. They have the roof locked down. If we get too close, they’ll clip our rotors!"

"Then drop us on the adjacent terrace!" I yelled back, checking the magazine of my Glock. My left shoulder was numb from the emergency dressing Mara had applied, but adrenaline was completely masking the pain.

Mara racked the slide of her heavy caliber pistol, her eyes cold and focused. Seeing her like this—not the gentle, artsy woman I thought I knew, but a hardened, lethal operative—was surreal. But right now, she was the ally I needed.

"I'm going with you," Mara said, her tone leaving no room for argument. "Lily and Rose are up there because of my family's sins. I am finishing this."

"Leo, stay with Elena in the chopper. You stay down," I ordered the boy, who nodded rapidly, hiding beneath the tactical seats.

Our pilot executed a dangerous, sweeping maneuver, dropping the helicopter within five feet of the building's lower mechanical terrace. The wind from the rotors whipped our faces as Mara and I jumped out, hitting the concrete roof hard. The helicopter instantly pulled up, circling away to draw fire.

Mara and I sprinted toward the maintenance door leading into the penthouse's upper floors. I kicked the lock open, and we plunged into the stairwell.

The sound of gunfire echoed from above—the sharp, distinct pops of a suppressed submachine gun met by the heavier, slower returns of the state trooper’s standard issue sidearm. The Cleaners were already inside the penthouse.

We bounded up the stairs, breaching the top door into the luxurious living room. The scene was horrific. The large floor-to-ceiling glass windows had been shattered, wind howling through the elegant space. The state trooper Elena had left behind lay slumped against the kitchen counter, bleeding from a chest wound but still breathing.

Three men in sleek, black tactical suits and night-vision visors were advancing toward the back bedroom where the twins were hidden.

"Hey!" I roared.

The two rear shooters spun around, their submachine guns tracking toward us. Mara and I fired simultaneously. Mara's round caught the first shooter square in the visor, the glass shattering as he dropped instantly. My shot caught the second man in the throat, sending him crashing into a marble coffee table.

The third shooter, the leader, dove behind a leather sofa, unleashing a blind, devastating spray of automatic fire that chewed through the drywall above our heads.

"Daniel, cover me!" Mara shouted, dropping low and sliding across the polished hardwood floor.

I stood out in the open, intentionally drawing the shooter’s attention, firing three rapid shots into the sofa, forcing him to keep his head down. That one-second distraction was all Mara needed. She rose from the flank, her weapon leveled, and fired two clean shots through the side of the sofa, neutralizing the final shooter.

Silence fell over the room, save for the whistling wind.

I ran past the bodies straight to the bedroom door, my heart hammering against my ribs. I threw the door open.

The room was empty.

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit of pure terror. "Lily! Rose!" I screamed, my voice cracking.

"Daniel..." a tiny, trembling voice came from the master bathroom adjoining the bedroom.

I rushed inside. The heavy porcelain bathtub had been pushed against the door, and hiding behind it, huddled in a tight embrace, were Lily and Rose. They were holding a heavy iron clothes iron like a weapon, their faces streaked with tears but completely unharmed.

"Oh thank God," I breathed, dropping to my knees and pulling both girls into a crushing embrace. "You're safe. I've got you. I've got you."

Lily looked over my shoulder, her eyes widening to the size of saucers. She let go of my neck, her voice a breathless whisper. "Aunt Mara...?"

Mara stepped into the bathroom, her weapon finally lowered, her hardened facade completely melting away. She fell to her knees next to us, her arms wrapping around me and the twins, her tears flowing freely now. "I'm here, sweetie. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I left you."

"You came back," Rose wailed, gripping Mara’s coat. "You promised you would send Daniel, and you both came back."

As we held each other in the ruined penthouse, the sound of police sirens began to wail from the streets far below, a reassuring chorus of civilization returning to reclaim the night. Elena’s tactical teams were finally securing the building.

But as I looked at the dead shooters on the floor, a chilling realization hit me. These weren't local street thugs or common mercenaries. They wore high-tech, military-grade gear with a distinct corporate logo stamped onto their chest plates: a stylized black diamond. The Obsidian Group wasn't just a syndicate; they were a global corporate empire. And we had just killed their elite recovery team.

Mara looked up at me, reading the expression on my face instantly. She stood up, her jaw tightening. "The Board of Directors isn't going to stop, Daniel. They know we have the decrypted files. As long as the Obsidian Group exists, these children will never be safe. We can't just hide anymore."

I stood up, holding Lily and Rose close, the pain in my shoulder entirely forgotten. I looked at my wife, the woman who had returned from the grave.

"Then we don't hide," I said, a dangerous, absolute resolve filling my voice. "We have their files, we have their accounts, and we have the media keys. It's time to take the war to their boardroom."
