Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Mist

--------------------------------

The world seemed to spin on its axis, the sounds of the ongoing firefight between Elena’s tactical team and Vance’s remaining thugs fading into a distant, muffled hum. I stared at the woman standing before me. The jawline, the deep blue eyes, the slight scar just below her left collarbone—it was her. It was Mara. My dead wife.

"Daniel," she said, her voice trembling, breaking through the hardened veneer of her tactical persona. She took a step toward me, her gun lowered, her eyes scanning the blood soaking through my left shoulder. "Oh god, Daniel, you're hurt."

"You're dead," I choked out, backing away a step, my mind fracturing under the sheer impossibility of the moment. "I held your hand. I watched the monitor go flat. I buried you, Mara. I spent eleven months wanting to die because you were gone!"

"I had to, Daniel," she wept, tears cutting through the grime on her face. "Please, you have to understand. The Obsidian Group... they didn't just want the ledgers. They had placed a deep-cover assassin inside the federal registry. If I didn't 'die,' they were going to execute you within forty-eight hours. The federal medical team helped me fake the terminal organ failure using an advanced nerve agent that mimics brain death. The casket... the casket was empty, Daniel. I’ve been living in the shadows for a year, hunting them from the inside out to make sure it was safe for me to come home to you."

A massive plot twist that tore my soul in half. The grief that had defined my existence for the last year was a constructed lie, a protective shield erected to keep me alive.

Before I could process the blinding mixture of rage, relief, and confusion, a low, wet groan came from the floorboards between us.

Viktor Vance was still alive. Bleeding heavily from the two gunshot wounds to his back, he crawled toward his fallen revolver, his fingers scraping against the rough wood of the pier. "You... you treacherous bitch..." he spat, blood bubbling at his lips. "You think you won? The Obsidian Group... is bigger than me. The Board... already knows you're here. They have a cleanup crew... already moving on the safe house."

The safe house. Lily and Rose.

My protective instincts exploded back to life, overriding the shock of seeing my wife alive. I stepped forward, kicking the revolver out of Vance's reach. I knelt down, grabbing him violently by his blood-soaked collar. "What did you say? What cleanup crew?"

Vance let out a wet, rattling laugh, his eyes rolling back in his head. "They don't leave... witnesses. The twins... die today." His head snapped back, his eyes glazing over completely as his breath left him for the final time. Viktor Vance was dead, but his final words left a lethal poison in the air.

Mara sprinted to my side, her face pale. "Daniel, we have to go. Now. He’s telling the truth. The Obsidian Group uses an elite wet-work team called the Cleaners. If they’ve located the safe house, Elena's single guard won't stand a chance."

Elena rushed over, surrounded by her victorious tactical officers, her eyes widening as she saw Mara. "What the... Mara? You're alive?"

"No time, Elena!" I roared, grabbing Leo by the arm and pulling him up. "Vance sent a hit team to the penthouse. We need an airlift, right now!"

Elena didn't hesitate, demonstrating why she was the best in the business. She pulled her radio. "All units, abort pier processing! We have a Code Red at the primary safe house. Get the chopper prepped on the pad now!"

Ten minutes later, we were inside a state police helicopter, the blades roaring overhead as we cut through the thick fog, flying blindly toward the downtown skyline. Mara sat across from me, pressure-dressing the gunshot wound in my shoulder. Her hands were warm, real, and trembling.

I stared at her, the silence between us heavy despite the roaring engine. "We're going to talk about this," I said, my voice tight. "Everything. Every single lie."

"I know," she whispered, her eyes full of sorrow and love. "I’ll tell you everything, Daniel. I promise. But right now, let’s save our family."

I looked down at Leo, who was huddled next to me, terrified but safe. I squeezed his shoulder. "Don't worry, Leo. We're going to get your sisters."

As the helicopter cleared the fog layer, the glass towers of downtown Seattle came into view. And there, at the top of the luxury high-rise where our safe house was located, I saw a terrifying sight.

Two unmarked black helicopters were hovering near the penthouse roof. Figures in dark tactical gear were rappelling down onto the balcony. The attack had already begun.
