Chapter 16 - The Trap at the Gala

The grand ballroom of the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. was a spectacle of opulence and power. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, shimmering light over hundreds of dignitaries, foreign ambassadors, tech pioneers, and Wall Street titans gathered for the annual Whitmore Humanitarian Gala.
At the center of the room, looking breathtaking in an off-the-shoulder midnight-blue velvet gown, stood Claire Whitmore. She moved effortlessly through the crowd, greeted with reverent applause and eager handshakes.
Standing discreetly in the upper VIP balcony overlooking the ballroom were Damon Cross and Carter Vance. They were holding glasses of champagne, watching Claire like hawks waiting to pounce.
“Look at her,” Damon sneered, taking a sip. “Smiling like she’s queen of the world. The federal prosecutor stepped into the building ten minutes ago. In half an hour, she’ll be leaving in handcuffs.”
Carter checked his encrypted smartphone screen. “The market short orders are placed. The moment the press picks up the arrest warrant, Whitmore-Vale stock will tumble. We’re about to make two hundred million dollars overnight, Damon.”
Below on the main floor, the chime sounded, signaling the start of the keynote speeches. The crowd gathered around the central stage as Claire stepped up to the podium.
The room fell into respectful silence.
“Good evening, distinguished guests, partners, and friends,” Claire began, her voice resonating warmly through the high-caliber sound system. “Tonight, we celebrate not just economic success, but the moral obligation of wealth to heal, to protect, and to empower.”
In the front row sat the Federal District Chief Prosecutor, flanked by two senior DOJ agents. He was holding a leather briefcase containing the leaked dossier Carter had sent him, his face grave and unreadable.
Claire met the prosecutor’s gaze directly, giving him a polite, knowing nod.
“As many of you know,” Claire continued smoothly, “the journey to rebuild this organization required absolute transparency. We exposed the dark, illegal practices of the past regime and proved that integrity is the ultimate foundation of true strength.”
She stepped out from behind the podium, holding a sleek silver tablet.
“However, even tonight, there are those who remain trapped in the toxic shadows of the old world,” Claire said, her voice dropping into a tone of quiet power. “Earlier today, certain disreputable individuals attempted to launch a covert market attack against this company using stolen, incomplete banking documents from Switzerland.”
A gasp rippled through the audience. Up in the balcony, Damon Cross froze, his champagne glass hovering mid-air. Carter’s eyes widened in sudden alarm.
“They alleged,” Claire said, displaying a high-definition image on the massive projection screens behind her, “that my late mother held an undeclared twenty-million-dollar asset in Geneva.”
She tapped the tablet screen. The image shifted, displaying the certified, fully audited second page of the Swiss account—bearing the official seals of Johns Hopkins University and the Department of the Treasury.
“What these amateur extortionists failed to understand,” Claire announced, her voice echoing with absolute authority, “is that this account is a fully restricted philanthropic annuity. Every penny has been continuously transferred to pediatric cancer research for over fifteen years. It was never a personal asset, and it has been fully validated by the IRS.”
The room erupted into thundering applause. The Federal Prosecutor in the front row smiled, shook his head in admiration, and closed his briefcase.
Up in the balcony, Damon’s face turned ash-grey. “What? No... no! That’s impossible!”
Carter frantically tapped his phone screen, his hands shaking violently. “Damon... the stock... the stock isn't dropping! It’s skyrocketing! Investors are buying up shares because of the Johns Hopkins announcement!”
Damon grabbed Carter by the lapels of his jacket, his eyes bulging with horror. “Our short positions! Carter, if the stock goes up, we owe three hundred million dollars in margin coverage by midnight!”
“I... I can’t stop it!” Carter stammered, panic consuming his face. “The market makers are executing automatic buybacks! We’re wiped out! We’re totally bankrupt!”
Before Damon could run for the balcony exit, four heavy hands slammed down on their shoulders.
Standing behind them were Marcus Vance and four armed Federal Marshals.
“Damon Cross, Carter Vance,” Marcus said with a cold, ruthless smile. “You are under arrest for market manipulation, corporate extortion, and unauthorized access to classified Swiss banking networks.”
Damon fell to his knees on the carpet, weeping as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists. Carter stared at his uncle in utter defeat, realizing that the Vance legacy of corruption had finally reached its absolute end.

Down on the main stage, Claire watched from afar as the marshals escorted the two men out of the ballroom in chains.
She raised her glass toward the crowd, her smile brilliant and untouchable under the shining crystal lights.
