Chapter 7 - The Shadows of San Diego

The rainy drizzle began around noon, turning the streets of downtown San Diego slick and gray.
Adrian Vale sat in the corner booth of a dingy, dimly lit bar three blocks away from the corporate tower that used to bear his name. On the sticky wooden table sat three empty glasses of cheap whiskey and his cracked smartphone.
His suit jacket was draped over the back of the chair, stained with dirt from the sidewalk. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were wild with a mixture of alcohol, exhaustion, and blinding humiliation.
Every television screen mounted above the bar was tuned to CNBC or local news outlets. The ticker running across the bottom of the screen was a non-stop nightmare:
*VALE INDUSTRIES SHARES SURGE 18% FOLLOWING BOARD OUSTER OF ADRIAN VALE.*
*CLAIRE WHITMORE NAMED INTERIM CEO.*
*FEDERAL PROBES REPORTEDLY LOOKING INTO OFF-SHORE VALE HOLDINGS.*
Adrian slammed his glass onto the table, causing the bartender to cast a sharp, warning glance in his direction.
“It’s not over,” Adrian muttered to himself, his voice thick with alcohol. “She thinks she won. She thinks she can just push me out of my own life.”
He grabbed his broken phone and frantically tapped out a number he had memorized years ago—a private investigator named Frank Miller. Frank was a dirty, former LAPD detective who specialized in corporate espionage, blackmail, and digging up buried bodies for high-paying clients.
The phone rang four times before a gravelly voice answered. “Miller.”
“Frank! It’s Adrian,” he gasped out, leaning close to the phone. “I need you. I need you right now.”
A long pause hung on the line. “Adrian. I’ve been watching the news. Looks like your wife played you like a cheap fiddle.”
“Shut up!” Adrian hissed, pressing his forehead against the sticky wood. “I don’t care about the news! I need you to find out where she’s keeping Noah in Washington, D.C. I want his location, her address, her daily routine, everything. I’m going to go there and take my son back.”
Frank let out a dry, hacking laugh. “Take your son back? With what money, Adrian? Word on the street is your primary accounts are frozen, your line of credit is dead, and federal agents are currently serving subpoenas on your financial team in Los Angeles.”
“I have assets!” Adrian shouted desperately. “I have cash in hidden accounts!”
“If those accounts are in the Caymans, your wife’s forensic team already handed the access keys over to the IRS this morning,” Frank said flatly. “I work for money, Adrian. Upfront retainer. Fifty grand minimum before I even fire up my laptop.”
“I’ll get you the money! Just start working!”
“No money, no work,” Frank said coldly. “And off the record, pal... if I were you, I’d be looking for a country that doesn’t have an extradition treaty with the United States instead of looking for your kid. Your wife isn’t just divorcing you, Adrian. She’s putting you in a federal cage.”

The line went dead.
Adrian dropped the phone onto the table. The room seemed to spin around him.
He was completely trapped. His wealth, his authority, his legal protections, his social standing—all swept away in less than twenty-four hours.
Just then, his phone vibrated on the table. An incoming call from an unknown number with a Washington, D.C. area code.
Adrian’s heart surged with a sudden, desperate hope. Was it Claire? Was she calling to negotiate? Was she ready to offer a settlement?
He snatched up the phone and pressed it to his ear. “Claire?”
Silence answered him for two agonized seconds. Then, a soft, familiar voice spoke—but it wasn't Claire.
“Hello, Adrian.”
Adrian’s blood ran cold. It was Savannah.
“Savannah?” Adrian stammered, his mind short-circuiting. “Where are you? Why did you turn off your phone? What is happening? The news... they’re saying you were working for her!”
A smooth, pleasant chuckle sounded through the speaker. “Working for her? No, Adrian. Claire and I didn’t just work together. We’ve been friends since college.”
Adrian froze, his jaw dropping open. “College?”
“Eleanor Whitmore funded my university education,” Savannah explained calmly, her tone entirely devoid of the breathy, timid accent she had used during their months together. “When Claire discovered you were planning to strip her trust funds and manipulate her family assets four years ago, she didn’t cry. She called me.”
Adrian felt as if he were falling down a dark, endless pit. “You... you were in on it from the beginning?”
“Every single day,” Savannah said with quiet satisfaction. “Every dinner where you made me eat caviar, every fake pregnancy symptom I pretended to have, every time you bragged about how weak and stupid your wife was... Claire was listening on a secure line. We laughed about you every single night, Adrian.”
“You disgusting, lying snake!” Adrian screamed, pulling the eyes of everyone in the bar toward his booth. “I gave you everything! I bought you that apartment! I bought you diamonds!”
“You bought those things with company money that Claire now owns,” Savannah corrected cheerfully. “Oh, and by the way? The penthouse in San Diego? It was never leased in your name. It was leased by Whitmore Holdings. You paid three times market value for rent, and every dollar went directly back into Claire’s legal defense fund.”
Adrian’s eyes widened in horror. He had been paying his wife’s legal team with the money he thought he was spending on his mistress.
“Enjoy the rest of your day, Adrian,” Savannah added softly. “Claire has a little surprise waiting for you outside the bar. You might want to step out.”
The call disconnected.
Adrian sat frozen, his chest heaving, his brain completely unable to process the depth of the trap that had been set around him.
Slowly, he pushed himself up from the booth, staggered to the exit of the bar, and pushed open the heavy wooden door into the pouring rain.
Standing on the sidewalk, waiting under black umbrellas, were two men in dark suits wearing brass badges around their necks. Behind them sat a black government sedan with red and blue emergency lights flashing silently against the rain-slick pavement.
The lead officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
“Adrian Vale?”
Adrian backed away, his heels hitting the glass front of the bar. “No... wait...”
May you like
“Adrian Vale, you are under arrest for federal securities fraud, grand larceny, and illegal wire transfers,” the officer declared firmly, grabbing Adrian’s arm and snapping the cold steel cuff onto his wrist. “You have the right to remain silent...”
As the rain poured down over his head, Adrian Vale was shoved into the back seat of the police cruiser, looking out through the wet glass at the city that had once been his kingdom.
