Chapter 10 - The Dawn of a New Pack

But Elan did not have to die alone. Before the Black Scourge could strike, Kaelen threw himself forward with a desperate battle cry, driving his long bone spear directly into the monster's exposed side. The distraction gave Silver the split second he needed. With a final, explosive burst of strength, the silver wolf lunged upward, his jaws clamping shut around the Black Scourge's neck, snapping the giant predator's spine with a sickening crack. The leader of the Dire Pack collapsed into the dust, lifeless. Seeing their alpha destroyed, the remaining Dire Wolves stopped their attack, whimpering in terror, before turning and fleeing out of the cave into the bright morning sun.
A profound, stunned silence fell over the painted chamber. The battle was over. The tribe had survived, but the old hierarchy was shattered forever. Kaelen, bleeding heavily, stepped forward. He looked at Elan, then knelt before the young boy, lowering his head in absolute submission and respect. The rest of the tribe followed suit, kneeling before the child they had once cast out into the freezing wilderness to die. Elan did not look at them with anger or a desire for revenge. He looked at them with compassion. He reached out his hand, helping Kaelen to his feet, signaling that the past was dead, and a new era had begun.
When the spring finally arrived, melting the harsh winter ice and bringing life back to the White Valley, a remarkable sight could be seen from the cliffs. The tribe was migrating once again, but they were no longer alone or afraid. Walking at the front of the line was Elan, now the recognized leader and spiritual guide of his people. Beside him walked Silver, the magnificent gray wolf, his head held high. Behind them followed several young wolf pups that the tribe had taken in, learning to care for them just as Elan had cared for Silver. The footprints they left behind in the soft, warm mud were no longer just the tracks of humans running from danger; they were side-by-side with the prints of canines—the eternal, unbreakable marks of a new partnership that would change the course of human history forever, ensuring that neither species would ever have to face the cold darkness alone.
