Chapter 9 - The Battle for the Valley

There was no more running. The inner chamber of the painted cave was a dead end, but its narrow entrance provided a strategic bottleneck. Elan stood at the center of the opening, his posture straight and his eyes burning with a fierce, newborn authority. He was no longer the broken outcast; he was the leader this tribe desperately needed. Beside him stood Silver, his teeth bared, ready for the final confrontation. The remaining hunters of the tribe, inspired by the ancient paintings and Elan’s courage, lined up behind the boy, their spears raised in perfect coordination.
The Black Scourge burst into the chamber, its massive, scarred body filling the tunnel. The giant beast let out a roar that shook dust from the cavern ceiling and lunged directly for Elan. But Elan did not flinch. He timed his move perfectly, sidestepping the massive jaws and driving his wooden spear deep into the monster's shoulder. At the same instant, Silver leaped through the air, his jaws locking onto the Black Scourge's throat in a desperate, lethal grip. The two alpha predators thrashed wildly across the cavern floor, tearing into each other with primeval fury.
The rest of the Dire Pack flooded into the bottleneck, but they were met with a united wall of human spears and fire. The hunters fought with a desperation they had never known before, inspired by the sight of a ten-year-old boy fighting side-by-side with a silver wolf. Elan retrieved a heavy rock, smashing it down onto a predator that had pinned a young hunter. The battle was a chaotic storm of blood, fur, and screams. The Black Scourge managed to throw Silver off, slamming the gray wolf against the stone wall. The giant monster raised its massive paw to deliver a fatal blow to the dazed wolf, but Elan placed himself directly in front of his friend, raising his broken spear, ready to die to protect the beast that had saved him so many times.
