Chapter 2 - The Crimson Snow

The first night in the wilderness was an agonizing descent into madness. Elan sought refuge in a shallow rock overhang, shivering violently as the storm raged just a few feet away. He knew that to fall asleep was to die, so he forced himself to stay awake by counting the beats of his racing heart. When the morning sun finally broke through the gray clouds, casting a blinding glare across the vast expanse of white, Elan crawled out of his shelter. His limbs were stiff, and hunger gnawed at his stomach like a vicious animal. He had to find food, or the cold wouldn't even have the chance to finish him off.
As he tracked through the deep snow, searching for frozen berries or the remains of a predator's kill, a strange, metallic scent caught his attention. It was the sharp, unmistakable smell of fresh blood. Moving cautiously, his hands trembling as he gripped his wooden spear, Elan followed the crimson trail winding through a dense thicket of frosted pine trees. The sight that greeted him in a small clearing made his breath catch in his throat. A massive gray wolf lay collapsed on its side, the pristine snow around it stained a deep, shocking red. It was an alpha, a magnificent creature with a coat the color of storm clouds and eyes that burned with a fierce, intelligent golden fire, even as its life ebbed away.

The wolf had been caught in a brutal trap—not one made by humans, but a natural vise formed by a fallen, razor-sharp shelf of ice and rock that had pinned its hind leg, crushing the bone. Nearby lay the carcass of a young stag, the prize the wolf had fought for but could not enjoy. The wolf growled, a low, guttural sound that vibrated through the frozen ground, baring its massive, white fangs at the approaching boy. Elan froze, terror gripping him. He raised his spear, knowing that a single lunging bite from this beast could end his life instantly. But as he looked closer into the wolf's golden eyes, he didn't see just a mindless monster; he saw a reflection of his own desperate struggle, a fellow outcast fighting against the inevitable grip of death.
Instead of striking, Elan slowly lowered his weapon. He took a step back, showing his open, empty hands to the beast. The wolf watched him with intense scrutiny, its ears pinning back but the growling subsiding into a pained whimper. Elan knew he was taking a horrific gamble, one that defied every survival instinct passed down by his ancestors. He approached the fallen shelf of ice and rock, using his spear as a lever to pry the heavy weight off the wolf's mangled leg. With a desperate heave, putting all his meager strength into the effort, the rock shifted. The wolf, realizing it was free, dragged itself out from under the trap, but it was too weak to stand. It collapsed again, its golden eyes fixed on the boy who had just granted it a temporary reprieve from death.
