Chapter 5 - Shadow of the Dire Pack

Before Elan could formulate a plan to rescue his former tribe, a new and far more terrifying threat emerged from the deep forests. The disruption and smell of blood from the ongoing siege had attracted a nightmare from the ancient world: a pack of Dire Wolves. These were not ordinary wolves like Silver; they were monstrous, prehistoric giants, twice the size of modern wolves, with massive jaws capable of crushing bone like twigs and an insatiable hunger for flesh. The Dire Pack was led by a scarred, one-eyed beast of immense proportions, a creature known in hunter legends as the Black Scourge.
The Dire Wolves did not care about the human conflict; they saw only an abundance of easy prey trapped in the canyon. They began to circle both the Blood-Stone warriors and Kaelen’s trapped tribe, their terrifying, deep-chested howls shaking the snow from the trees. The situation had degraded into a chaotic, three-way nightmare. The Blood-Stone warriors, terrified by the sudden appearance of the giant predators, broke their siege formation and began to panic, firing wild, ineffective arrows into the darkness. Kaelen’s tribe was pinned against the sheer rock wall, completely defenseless as the Dire Pack began to close the distance, their eyes glowing like malicious embers in the twilight.
Elan realized that if he did not act immediately, everyone in the canyon would be slaughtered. He looked at Silver, whose fur was standing on end, his lips pulled back in a fierce snarl of absolute hatred. Silver recognized the Black Scourge; it was the very pack that had driven him out and left him to die weeks before. This was no longer just a rescue mission for Elan; it was a battle for survival and vengeance for both the boy and the silver wolf. Elan tightly gripped his spear, ignited a thick pine branch with a spark from his carrying-pouch, and prepared to leap into the jaws of madness, relying entirely on the unique, unbroken bond he shared with his canine companion.
