Chapter 10 - Midnight Confessions

The manhunt for Victor Bennett ended less than forty minutes after his frantic phone call. Coast Guard interceptors cornered his rented speedboat against the rocky jetty of Atlantic City, and federal agents slapped waterproof handcuffs onto his wrists before he could throw his burner phone into the ocean.

News outlets broadcasted footage of Victor being hauled off in a wet, muddy jacket, screaming obscenities at the camera lenses—a far cry from the untouchable golden heir he had pretended to be all his life.

I sat curled up in a plush armchair in the penthouse library, staring at the flickering flames of the gas fireplace. The heavy weight of my entire life shifting in the span of a single week felt surreal.

Daniel walked in quietly, carrying a tray with two steaming mugs of hot tea. He set the tray down on the coffee table and knelt beside my chair, gently taking my hands in his.

“You’re quiet tonight,” Daniel said softly, his thumb tracing the back of my hand. “Are you having second thoughts?”

“No,” I answered honestly, looking down into his dark, intelligent eyes. “I don't feel regret. I feel... tired. For my entire life, I was conditioned to believe that my family was invincible, that their approval was the only thing that gave me value.”

“They were parasites,” Daniel said firmly. “They fed on your patience, your loyalty, and your silence. You broke the cycle, Claire. That takes more courage than anything I’ve ever seen on a trading floor.”

“Why did you really propose to me, Daniel?” I asked, searching his face in the dim amber light of the library. “Even after discovering what my father did to your uncle... you still stayed.”

Daniel smiled faintly, a deeply tender expression that he rarely showed the corporate world.

“When I lost my uncle twenty-five years ago, my family swore revenge against the Bennetts,” Daniel confessed quietly. “I spent a decade climbing the ranks of Wall Street with a single objective: to legally destroy Richard Bennett’s empire from the foundation up.”

He paused, reaching up to gently tuck a stray strand of blonde hair behind my ear.

“I came into your life as an act of calculated vengeance,” Daniel continued, his voice dropping to an intimate whisper. “But somewhere along the way... watching how bravely you survived in that toxic household, how fiercely you protected the people you cared about... I fell completely, unconditionally in love with you. The vengeance was mine, Claire. But you became my home.”

Tear welled up in my eyes, spilling over my lashes as the last walls around my heart completely dissolved.

I leaned forward, wrapping my arms around his neck, and kissed him deeply, tasting the warmth and truth of his words.

“Then let’s finish building it,” I whispered against his lips.

Outside, the Manhattan skyline sparkled like a field of diamonds, indifferent to the ruins of the past, welcoming the dawn of a brand-new empire.
