Chapter 19 - Whispers in the Gallery

The annual Metropolitan Museum Spring Gala was the most exclusive ticket in New York society—a glittering night of haute couture, champagne, and high-stakes social networking.

When Daniel and I stepped out of our Bentley onto the museum’s grand stone steps, the flashbulbs illuminated the night like a wall of lightning. But this time, the whispers in the crowd weren't filled with scandalous gossip about impending arrests or family feuds.

They were whispers of absolute awe.

I wore a custom midnight-blue silk velvet gown that shimmered under the chandeliers, complemented by a diamond choker that had once belonged to the Sterling family estate. Daniel walked beside me in a sharp tuxedo, his arm firmly supporting my waist, looking every bit the untouchable king of Wall Street.

As we entered the grand hall, society elites, politicians, and billionaire investors immediately parted ways, offering respectful nods and admiring glances to the couple who had successfully reshaped the city’s financial landscape.

“Looks like you’re officially the darling of high society,” Daniel whispered into my ear as we accepted two flutes of vintage champagne from a passing waiter.

“Not high society,” I corrected him with a soft smirk, clinking my glass against his. “We own the society.”

Across the crowded ballroom, I spotted Aunt Evelyn standing near the marble pillars, dressed in understated black, watching us with a cautious, respectful nod.

I raised my champagne glass toward her in a polite, distant acknowledgment. She nodded back quickly before turning away into the crowd, knowing full well that her survival depended on her staying out of our way.

“Shall we dance?” Daniel asked, extending his hand toward the ballroom floor where the orchestra had just begun a slow, elegant waltz.

“I thought you’d never ask,” I replied, placing my hand in his.
