Chapter 14 - Echoes of the Past

Following the court appearance, Daniel drove us upstate to a quiet, secluded park bordering the Hudson River. The autumn leaves were turning brilliant shades of amber and gold, crunching softly beneath our boots as we walked along the gravel path.
“Why did you bring me here?” I asked, looking around the peaceful, tree-lined landscape.
Daniel stopped walking and turned to face me, his expression softening completely. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, old-fashioned brass key attached to a leather tag.
“This park was built on the land my uncle Arthur owned before Bennett stole it,” Daniel explained quietly, his thumb running over the brass tag. “After the company collapsed and my family lost everything, my mother and I used to come here every Sunday. We sat on that exact wooden bench over there, wondering how a man could destroy an entire family just to feed his own greed.”
I looked at the weathered wooden bench, then back up into Daniel’s dark, soulful eyes. “And now?”
“Now,” Daniel said softly, stepping closer and taking both my hands in his, “the land has been legally restored to the Sterling family trust. The city approved our petition yesterday to rebuild Arthur’s research foundation right here.”
Tears pricked my eyes as I realized the magnitude of what he was saying. “You didn't just get revenge, Daniel. You reclaimed your family’s honor.”
“We reclaimed it,” Daniel corrected gently, pressing the brass key into my palm and closing my fingers over it. “Because you were the one who unlocked the doors from the inside.”
I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest as he held me tightly against the crisp autumn wind.
For the first time in my life, the ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest. There was no more fear, no more hiding behind my father’s shadow, and no more apologies for surviving.
“So,” I whispered against his shoulder, a playful smile breaking through my tears. “Does the newly appointed CEO of Sterling-Hale Holdings get to take the rest of the afternoon off?”
May you like
Daniel chuckled, pulling back to look down at me with a warm, mischievous grin.
“For you, Madam CEO,” Daniel said, kissing my forehead tenderly, “the entire city is ours.”
