Chapter 16 - The Trap is Sprung

Two weeks later, the federal prosecutor’s office dropped its bombshell: a superseding indictment adding charges of racketeering, witness tampering, and attempted murder-for-hire against Richard Bennett. Evidence showed he had paid off a prison inmate to silence a former accountant who threatened to testify against him.
The trial was scheduled to begin in early December, and legal experts predicted my father would face a minimum of forty years behind bars with no possibility of parole.
I stood in our penthouse living room, adjusting the diamond tennis bracelet on my wrist as I prepared for a high-profile charity gala celebrating the launch of Arthur Sterling’s restored historical foundation.
Daniel walked out of our walk-in closet, looking impeccably handsome in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo. He walked up behind me, fastening the clasp of my diamond necklace before resting his hands on my shoulders, looking at our reflection in the full-length mirror.
“You look breathtaking,” Daniel whispered, kissing my bare shoulder.
“Thank you,” I smiled, turning around to face him. “Are you ready to face the New York social elite tonight? Every gossip columnist in the city will be waiting to see how we handle the scandal.”
“Let them look,” Daniel replied with a confident smirk. “They aren't looking at a scandal, Claire. They’re looking at royalty.”
When our black Bentley pulled up to the grand ballroom at the Plaza Hotel, flashbulbs exploded like a thunderstorm against the tinted windows. Dozens of reporters shouted questions over the barrier ropes, desperate for a quote from the woman who dismantled the Bennett empire.
We stepped out hand-in-hand, walking up the red carpet with absolute poise and unbreakable grace. We didn't hide, we didn't dodge questions, and we certainly didn't look like victims.

As we entered the grand ballroom, the string quartet paused for a fraction of a second, and every head in the room turned toward us in absolute, stunned silence.
I smiled warmly, raised my champagne glass in a silent toast to the room, and walked forward into our bright, unyielding future.
