Chapter 15 - THE DEAD MAN'S LEDGER

The silence in the penthouse was absolute. Even the hum of the city far below seemed to vanish, swallowed by the chilling implications of Julian’s words over the intercom.
"Repeat that," Adrien ordered, his voice dropping an octave into a tone so cold it felt like liquid nitrogen.
"I know how it sounds, Boss," Julian stammered from the control terminal downstairs. "The biometric signature attached to the wire transfer belongs to Carlo Viscari. The encryption key hasn't been used since 2004. But the system just cleared a twenty-million-dollar transfer to an offshore trust in the Cayman Islands."
Adrien stepped away from me, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides as his mind raced to connect the impossible dots. "That’s impossible. I buried him myself. I watched the casket lower into the family mausoleum in Queens."
"Unless the funeral was as fake as my mother's," I said, stepping forward, my heart hammering against my ribs.
Adrien spun around to face me, his expression a mix of shock and dark realization. "My father was a paranoid megalomaniac. If anyone had the resources, the motive, and the absolute ruthlessness to fake his own death to escape federal racketeering charges while pinning it on Robert Blake... it was him."
"And if he’s alive," I continued the terrifying thought, "then everything we fought for—every secret we uncovered—was just a game he set up decades ago."
"Get the car ready," Adrien barked into his comms unit, turning back toward the wall rack to retrieve his tactical gear. "Viktor, secure the perimeter. No one enters or leaves this building."
"Adrien, wait," I caught his arm, stopping him in his tracks. "If your father is alive, he’s not just moving money. He’s coming for the loose ends. And that means us."
Adrien looked down at me, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that terrified me—not because I doubted him, but because I knew what was coming. The war wasn't over. It was only entering its final, most dangerous phase.
"Then we end it tonight," Adrien said, pulling me close for one fierce, desperate kiss before strapping his holster across his chest. "Once and for all."
As we rode the private elevator down to the subterranean garage, my phone vibrated in my pocket. A single text message from an unknown number.
Check the trunk of your car, Lena. Welcome home.
My blood froze. I looked at Adrien, holding up the screen.

Without a word, Adrien drew his weapon, motioned for Viktor to take cover, and slowly stepped forward to pry open the trunk of our parked town car.
Inside, resting on a bed of fresh white roses, was a vintage cassette tape labeled with a single word in my grandfather's handwriting: PART TWO.
