Chapter 19 - SUNRISE OVER THE HORIZON

Three days later, the news broke across every major network: Carlo Viscari, the elusive patriarch of New York’s most notorious crime syndicate, had been captured during a federal raid on a remote upstate compound. Along with his arrest came the total dismantling of the offshore financial networks that had funded corruption across the Tri-State area for over thirty years.
The city of New York felt different as I stood once more on the wraparound balcony of the TriBeCa penthouse. The air was crisp, carrying the clean scent of an autumn morning without the lingering terror of hidden assassins, wiretaps, or ticking bombs.
The sliding door opened softly behind me. Footsteps approached, steady and familiar.
"Her flight landed in Zurich twenty minutes ago," Adrien said quietly, stepping up beside me and handing me a fresh cup of coffee. "Viktor confirmed she’s at the safe house. Complete anonymity. She’s safe, Lena."
I took the ceramic mug from his hand, leaning my shoulder against his warm frame. "She sent me a text message this morning. Just three words: Thank you, sweetie."
Adrien smiled, a genuine, relaxed expression that made him look younger, freer than he had ever looked since the night we first met. "She earned her peace. And so did we."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box—the exact same heirloom pendant he had shown me weeks ago on this very balcony.
"I didn't give this to you properly before," Adrien murmured, turning to face me completely, his dark eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that took my breath away. "Things kept getting interrupted by gunfire."
I couldn't help the soft laugh that escaped my lips. "Well, to be fair, you do tend to attract a lot of dramatic company."
Adrien’s mouth curved into a slow, crooked smile. He opened the velvet box, lifted the gold ivy pendant, and gently fastened it around my neck. The cool metal rested against my skin, warming almost instantly to my pulse.
"I spent my entire life building walls to keep the world out," Adrien whispered, his hands sliding around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest. "I thought love was a liability. I thought family was just another word for leverage."
"And now?" I asked softly, looking up into his striking face.

"Now," Adrien kissed my forehead tenderly, his lips lingering against my skin before moving down to capture mine in a slow, deep, breathtaking kiss, "you are my only rule."
We stood there together on the balcony as the morning sun climbed higher into the azure sky, casting a golden glow over the sprawling skyline of Manhattan—a city we had both conquered, side by side.
