Chapter 6 - MIDNIGHT IN QUEENS

The rain had reduced to a persistent, heavy mist by the time our armored town car slipped off the Grand Central Parkway and navigated the deserted industrial blocks of Long Island City. The First National Bank of Queens stood like a monolithic fortress of gray stone against the dark morning sky, its heavy iron gates secured with computerized biometric locks.

"Julian disabled the exterior perimeter alarms," Adrien said, keeping his eyes fixed on the illuminated lobby through the tinted windows. "Marco’s access codes were still active in the mainframe. We have exactly four minutes before the security firm flags an unauthorized manual override."

"And if they flag it sooner?" I asked, clutching the metal case containing my father’s cassette recorder and letters.

"Then we shoot our way out," Adrien replied simply, opening his door and stepping out into the damp chill. He offered me his hand, his grip warm, steady, and entirely reassuring.

We moved quickly through the side employee entrance, navigating the labyrinth of fluorescent-lit hallways until we reached the subterranean vault level. The air down here smelled of ozone, old paper, and cold steel. Adrien pulled a small, modified decoding device from his pocket, plugging it directly into the interface panel of Vault Section 4.

Bip. Bip. Bip.

The green LED light flickered twice, then turned a solid, brilliant blue. With a heavy, pneumatic hiss, the twelve-inch-thick steel door of Box 412 swung outward.

"Arthur Pendelton," Adrien muttered, stepping inside the narrow, brightly lit alcove.

There were no stacks of cash or gold bars inside. Instead, the box was packed tight with thick manila folders, bound with yellowed rubber bands, and a single, modern flash drive wrapped in a handwritten note.

I reached inside and pulled out the top folder. The label across the front made my breath hitch.

EVECUTIVE ORDER: OPERATION BLACKWAVE – 1998.

"Open the flash drive," Adrien urged, pulling a compact laptop from his tactical bag and plugging it in.

Within seconds, a video file began to play on the screen. The video was grainy, shot from a hidden security camera mounted in what looked like a high-end corporate boardroom. A younger Robert Blake sat at the head of a mahogany table, sliding a massive briefcase filled with untraceable bearer bonds across to a man who looked shockingly familiar.

I gripped the edge of the table. "That’s... that's my grandfather."

Adrien stared at the screen in absolute disbelief. "Thomas Hart’s father? Your grandfather was part of the original board that set up the slush fund?"

"He wasn't just part of it," a calm, chillingly familiar voice echoed from the end of the vault hallway. "He owned it."

We both spun around. Standing at the entrance of the vault aisle, holding a suppressed automatic pistol aimed directly at my chest, was Marcus.
