Chapter 5 - THE BETRAYAL WITHIN

"What did you say?" Marco’s voice cut through the room like a razor blade, his tone dropping into a dangerous, defensive register as he glared at the speaker terminal.
"Shut up, Julian," Adrien commanded, his eyes locked onto Marco. "Play that transmission back from the beginning."
The audio replayed, the soft, trembling voice filling the cavernous penthouse once more: "...don't trust the man standing beside you."
"That’s a synthesized vocal loop," Marco insisted, taking a half-step back, his hand tightening around the grip of his pistol. "Blake’s tech team has been spoofing our comms all night, Boss. You know they can mimic any frequency in the Tri-State area!"
"Is that so, Marco?" Adrien asked, his voice dangerously calm. He didn't reach for a weapon, but the absolute stillness in his posture signaled an apex predator ready to strike. "Then how did Blake's team know we were at the Newark storage unit thirty minutes before we even arrived?"
Marco swallowed hard, his throat working visibly. "We were tracked by the GPS unit on the sedan—I told you that!"
"You were the only one who inspected the vehicle's undercarriage before we left the club," Adrien replied softly, every word landing like a physical blow. "You were the one who cleared the route through the eastern gate. And you were the only person in my inner circle who knew about the Arthur Pendelton safe deposit box."
The room seemed to drop ten degrees. I stood frozen between them, my eyes darting from Adrien’s lethal composure to Marco’s trembling facade.
"You're making a mistake, Adrien," Marco muttered, his voice shaking as he pulled the pistol halfway out of his holster. "I’ve bled for this family for fifteen years! I took a bullet in Chicago so you could walk away clean!"
"And Robert Blake offered you a pension that made fifteen years of bleeding look like amateur hour," Adrien said, stepping forward. "Drop the piece, Marco. Don't make me do this in front of her."
For a agonizing second, Marco looked like he was going to raise the weapon. His finger twitched against the trigger guard, his eyes wild with desperation. But as he looked past Adrien and saw the red laser dot of a sniper rifle—projected from an adjacent rooftop through the reinforced glass—dotting the center of his forehead, all the fight drained out of him.
With a hollow metallic clatter, Marco dropped the pistol onto the marble floor.
"He has my sister, Adrien," Marco choked out, tears finally spilling over his eyelids as he fell to his knees. "In a facility upstate. If I didn't feed them your coordinates, they would have put her in the ground by midnight."
"Family doesn't excuse treason," Adrien said coldly, signaling toward the shadows near the elevator bank. Two armed enforcers stepped out, grabbing Marco by the arms and dragging him toward the lower levels without a single word of protest.
The heavy steel doors closed behind them, leaving us alone once more in the echoing penthouse.
"Are you okay?" Adrien asked immediately, turning his full, unfiltered attention toward me, his hands gently gripping my shoulders.
"I should be terrified," I breathed, looking up into his striking, intense eyes. "Instead, I’m standing in a mafia safe house with a man who just executed his most trusted advisor, listening to a voice recording that might be my dead mother warning us about a trap."
"She’s not dead, Lena," Adrien said, his thumb softly brushing against my cheekbone, wiping away a smudge of soot from the parking garage explosion. "And we are going to find her. But first, we need to open that safe deposit box in Queens before Robert Blake clears out every single dollar and document inside."

"When do we leave?" I asked, leaning into his touch before I even realized I was doing it.
"Now," Adrien replied, his jaw tightening as he pulled his black leather jacket back on. "Before Blake realizes his inside man is gone."
