Chapter 11 - The Dawn After the Storm

The morning sun broke through the clouds over Queens, casting warm golden light across the cobblestone streets of Long Island City. The storm had finally passed, leaving the air fresh and crisp.

Inside the grand dining room of my estate, the dark shadows of betrayal had been replaced by a purposeful, quiet resolve. Tony sat across from me at the massive table, reviewing thick stacks of legal documents and financial reports. Bruno lay comfortably near the fireplace, his heavy tail thumping softly against the rug whenever my boots moved.

"The federal raid on Pier 42 was a complete success, Boss," Tony reported, sliding a tablet across the table. "The FBI and Coast Guard seized fifty million in contraband. Harlan and Don Corrado are currently being held without bail in federal custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan."

I took a slow sip of black coffee, feeling the exhaustion of the past forty-eight hours weighing on my shoulders. "And Captain Harris?"

"Harris cracked under interrogation three hours ago," Tony chuckled coldly. "When he realized the feds had all his offshore bank records and wiretap logs, he sang like a canary. He implicated six other corrupt officers in the department, along with three city officials who were taking payoffs to overlook Harlan’s smuggling operations."

"Good," I said, setting my coffee cup down. "Let the system tear itself apart from the inside. What about the Vasquez family?"

"They’re resting comfortably at St. Jude's private wing," Tony replied, his expression softening. "Dr. Vance says Elena’s vital signs are completely normal now. She’s eating warm soup and asking when she can see Bruno again."

A faint smile touched my lips for the first time in days. "We'll go visit her this afternoon. But first, we have business to clean up."

I stood up and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the East River. Across the water, the Manhattan skyline gleamed in the sunlight, but I knew the vacuum left by Victor Harlan’s arrest would create immediate chaos among the rival factions.

"Harlan's arrest leaves a massive power void in Manhattan," I said, turning back to Tony. "Every mid-level captain across the river will be scrambling to grab his territory. Some of them might think Queens is vulnerable because of our internal purge."

"Let them try," Tony sneered, tapping his knuckle against his sidearm holster. "We took down Harlan, Corrado, and the Chief of Detectives in a single night. Nobody in New York has the firepower to challenge us right now."

"Don't get arrogant, Tony," I warned him gently. "Arrogance is what killed Harlan. Arrogance is what blinded Corrado. When a king falls, the scavengers don't fight fair. They strike in the dark."

At that moment, my secure phone on the desk chimed with a private notification.

I walked over and picked it up. An encrypted text message from an unregistered number appeared on the screen:

*Don Gabriel. You cleared the rats from your house, but you haven't seen the snake in Chicago. Salvatore is moving five hit squads to New York by train tonight. - A Friend.*

I stared at the message, my eyes narrowing.

"Boss?" Tony asked, noticing the sharp shift in my posture. "What is it?"

"Salvatore," I whispered.

Don Salvatore was the undisputed head of the Chicago Outfit—a multi-generational criminal syndicate that had maintained an uneasy non-aggression pact with New York for over two decades. If Salvatore was sending men to New York, it meant Harlan and Corrado were just tiny cogs in a much larger machine.

Bruno suddenly stood up, raising his heavy head and letting out a soft, inquiring bark.

"Get the capos together, Tony," I ordered calmly. "We aren't done fighting yet."
