Chapter 8 - The Whispers of the Innocent

Ten minutes later, the armored Escalade pulled back up to the private loading entrance of St. Jude’s clinic.
I walked down the quiet, sterile hallway of the recovery wing, my heavy boots echoing against the linoleum floor. Bruno walked right beside me, his nose sniffing the clinical air, alert and focused.
I pushed open the door to Room 204.
The room was bathed in soft, warm light. Tomas and Rosa were sitting on either side of the small hospital bed, holding their daughter’s hands, tears streaming down their faces.
In the center of the bed sat tiny Elena Vasquez.
She was wearing a light blue hospital gown, her dark curls resting against her shoulders. She looked thin and exhausted, her skin still possessing a faint, unnatural pallor from the lingering effects of the paralytic toxin, but her big brown eyes were open and clear.
When Bruno trotted into the room, Elena’s face instantly lit up with a brilliant, joyful smile.
"Bruno!" she gasped, her voice raspy and soft.
The massive Rottweiler, who had torn apart hitmen and intimidated powerful mobsters, walked over to the side of the bed with gentle, delicate steps. He placed his massive head right on the edge of her mattress, tail wagging softly, letting out a warm, happy breath.
Elena reached out her tiny hand and stroked Bruno’s dark fur behind his ears. "Good boy, Bruno... good boy..."
Tomas wiped his eyes and looked up at me with profound emotion. "Don Gabriel... the doctor said her recovery is a miracle. The poison is almost entirely out of her system."
"She’s a fighter, Tomas," I said, walking over to the foot of the bed and offering a gentle smile to the little girl. "Hello, Elena."
Elena looked up at me, her brown eyes filling with a mixture of recognition and fear. "Are you... the man who owns Bruno?"
"Yes, sweetheart," I replied softly, leaning down to her eye level. "My name is Gabriel. Bruno works with me. He was the one who heard you calling for help inside that box."
Elena’s tiny fingers gripped Bruno’s fur tighter. "I was in the dark... I couldn't move my fingers or my toes. I couldn't open my eyes. I could hear people crying outside, but my mouth wouldn't make any sound..."
Rosa covered her mouth, stifling a heartbroken sob.
"It’s okay now, Elena," I said gently. "You’re safe. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. But I need you to tell me something very important. Dr. Vance said you mentioned a name when you woke up."
Elena’s small shoulders trembled slightly. She looked over at her father, then back at me.
"The day behind Daddy’s restaurant..." Elena whispered, her voice shaking. "I was drawing horses near the grease traps in the alley. I saw the mean man... Marco... talking to three men in dark suits."
"What were they doing, Elena?" I asked patiently.
"They were moving large wooden boxes out of a big black truck," she said. "One of the boxes fell on the ground, and it broke open. I saw... I saw a lady inside the box. Her wrists were tied with tape, and she was crying."
I felt an icy rage surge through my veins, but I kept my face completely calm so as not to frighten her.
"And then Marco saw you?" I asked.
Elena nodded, tears forming in her eyes. "Marco grabbed my arm real hard. He told me if I said anything to Daddy, he would kill my family. Then another man walked out from the back of the truck..."
"Who was the other man, Elena?" I asked. "Was it Victor Harlan?"
"No," Elena whispered, shaking her head. "It wasn't him. The other man had a shiny badge on his jacket. He had gray hair and a big silver ring on his finger. Marco called him 'Captain'."
My entire body went rigid.
*A shiny badge. Captain.*
"Captain Harris..." I muttered under my breath, the final, terrifying piece of the puzzle falling into place.
Captain Jonathan Harris was the head of the NYPD's 108th Detective Precinct in Queens. He was the high-ranking law enforcement officer who oversaw all major criminal investigations in our district. He was the man who had officially signed off on the accident report declaring Elena’s death a simple hit-and-run without ordering a toxicology report or autopsy.
He wasn't just turning a blind eye to Harlan's operations for a bribe.
He was actively running the human trafficking ring with Harlan and Corrado, using his police authority to protect the supply routes and sweep the evidence under the rug.
"Gabriel?" Tomas asked, seeing the lethal change in my expression. "Who is Captain Harris?"
"He's the man who protected the monsters who hurt your daughter," I said, my voice quiet as death. "And he's the man who signed her fake death certificate."
Elena reached out and touched my sleeve. "Is the bad man going to come back, Mr. Gabriel?"
I looked into her innocent eyes, reached down, and took her tiny hand in mine.
"No, Elena," I promised her with absolute certainty. "He’s never coming back. Bruno and I are going to make sure of that."
I turned toward the door. "Tomas, Rosa, stay here with Dr. Vance. I’m leaving four of my best armed guards outside this door. Nobody enters this room without my personal permission."
I walked out into the corridor, where Tony was waiting for me.
"Boss?" Tony asked. "What did she say?"
May you like
"Call the crew," I commanded, my eyes blazing with dark fire. "We aren't just fighting rival mobs anymore, Tony. We’re going to war with the Chief of Detectives."
