Chapter 27 - The Summer at the Lake

That summer, our family built a peaceful lakefront retreat in upstate New York, far away from the noise and concrete of the city.
The estate sat on a quiet crystal-clear lake surrounded by pine forests and rolling green hills. It was a place where no gunshots had ever echoed, where no sirens wailed, and where the past could finally rest in total serenity.
Tomas Vasquez took over as the head chef of the local community diner in the nearby town, serving his famous dishes to delighted locals who treated him like family.
Every morning, I would walk down the long wooden dock leading out into the calm blue lake, carrying a mug of coffee.
Bruno would trot beside me at a slow, comfortable pace, his graying snout sniffing the fresh mountain air, watching ducks swim lazily through the water.
We would sit together at the end of the dock for hours in peaceful silence.
I would look at the scars on my hands—scars from street wars, bullet wounds, and brutal fights from a past life that felt like a million miles away.
And then I would look down at Bruno’s graying face, gently scratching behind his ears.
"We made it, Brun," I would whisper to him in the morning sun. "We made it all the way."
Bruno would nudge his cold nose against my wrist, letting out a soft, low bark of agreement.
In the afternoons, Elena would come down to the lake with her favorite horse, a gentle brown mare named 'Guardian' that I had bought for her tenth birthday. She would ride through the green meadows surrounding the estate, with Bruno trotting faithfully along the fence line, keeping his watchful eyes on her every movement.
There were no mob bosses.
There were no corrupt cops.
There were no hidden traps or betrayals.

There was only the warm sunshine, the cool lake water, and the unbreakable bond of a family built on love, honor, and loyalty.
