🎬 PART 4: “Family Sacrifice” - Full Story

The cramped apartment kitchen was freezing, illuminated only by a single hanging lightbulb that flickered occasionally. David sat at the small wooden table, watching his six-year-old daughter, Lily, happily eat the last plate of mac and cheese.
"Aren't you hungry, Daddy?" Lily asked, pausing with her spoon, her big brown eyes filled with concern.
David forced a warm, loving smile, leaning forward to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "I already ate a huge lunch at the construction site, sweetie. Don't worry about me. Eat up so you can grow big and strong."
Under the table, David clenched his hands into tight fists to stop them from shaking. His stomach was twisting in a painful knot from hunger.
An hour later, after he had carried a sleeping Lily to her bed, David returned to the silent kitchen. He sat in the dark, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a small silver chain with a broken half-moon charm. It was the only thing he had left of his wife, Anna, who had passed away two years ago.
Tears finally spilled over his eyelashes, rolling down his gaunt cheeks. He pressed the cold metal tightly against his chest, letting out a long, shaky breath that formed a faint mist in the cold air.

"I'm trying, Anna," David whispered into the empty room, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "I promise I'll keep her safe."
He stared at the charm for a long moment, and slowly, the defeat in his eyes vanished. He wiped his face, stood up, and went back to his desk to look for a second job online.
