🎬 PART 5: “Redemption” - Full Story

The clock on the wall read 2:15 AM. The convenience store was dead quiet except for the low hum of the refrigerators. Marcus, a sixteen-year-old boy in a muddy oversized hoodie, stood frozen in the aisle. In his left arm, he held a crying two-month-old baby wrapped in a faded blanket. In his right hand, he clutched a carton of milk.
He made a run for the door, but a heavy hand landed firmly on his shoulder. It was Arthur, the elderly security guard.
"Drop the milk, kid," Arthur said, his voice stern but low.
Marcus spun around, backing away until his spine hit the shelf. He was trembling so hard the milk carton nearly slipped from his hand. Tears streamed down his dirty face.
"Please, sir," Marcus sobbed, his voice thin and desperate. "I'll pay you back when I grow up, I swear. I'm not a thief. My older sister, Anna, she’s too sick to leave the bed. The baby hasn’t eaten since yesterday."
Arthur looked down at the wailing infant. Suddenly, his breath caught in his throat. On the baby's tiny, chubby wrist, tied with a piece of dirty string, was a silver chain with half a broken moon charm.
Arthur’s face turned pale under the harsh fluorescent lights. A wound he had buried deep in his chest fifteen years ago ripped wide open. He stepped closer, his hand shaking as he reached toward the baby.
"Where... where did you get this charm?" Arthur asked, his voice suddenly breaking, completely losing his authoritative tone.
Marcus swallowed hard, sensing the sudden pain in the old man's eyes. "My sister had it. She said it belonged to our mom who died a long time ago."

Arthur closed his eyes, a single tear escaping and tracking down his wrinkled cheek. He took a deep breath, looked at Marcus, and took off his heavy security jacket, wrapping it over the shivering boy's shoulders.
"Keep the milk," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a lifetime of regret and sudden hope. "Take me to Anna. Right now."
