Chapter 3 - The Hidden Will

The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Clara stared at Elias, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Murdered? No, no... the doctors said it was an aneurysm. She just... collapsed in the kitchen."

Elias walked past the shattered mug, his heavy boots crunching on the ceramic, and knelt in front of her. He looked directly into her terrified eyes. "The medical examiner is on the Whitmore payroll. I know, because I'm the one Charles usually sends to deliver the envelopes of cash."

Clara grabbed the collar of his shirt, her small fists twisting the dark fabric. "Who did it? Was it Charles? Did my own father kill her?"

"Not Charles directly," Elias said softly, his large hands gently wrapping over her small ones to steady her. "Victoria. She found out about the will."

"What will?" Clara cried out, confusion and grief warring in her chest.

Elias stood up, pulling a heavy encrypted tablet from a safe hidden behind a bookshelf. He tapped in a long passcode and handed it to her. Displayed on the screen was a scanned document, bearing Charles Whitmore's signature, but the secondary signature belonged to Clara's grandfather—the man who actually built the Whitmore empire.

"Your grandfather knew about you," Elias explained. "He despised Charles’s cruelty and Victoria’s arrogance. Before he died last year, he amended the trust. The majority of the Whitmore controlling shares don't pass to Victoria when she turns thirty next month. They pass to you. The 'illegitimate' mistake."

Clara’s eyes scanned the legal jargon, the words blurring through fresh tears. "They killed my mother over money."

"They killed her because your mother had a copy of this document," Elias corrected. "They thought by eliminating her and bringing you into the house as a beaten-down, humiliated prisoner, you would never have the strength or the resources to claim what is rightfully yours. They wanted you terrified. They wanted you to break."

A profound silence filled the loft. The scared, fragile girl who had almost knelt in spilled wine was dying. In her place, a cold, sharp realization was taking root. Every cruel word, every moment of isolation, the sudden 'benevolence' of her father bringing her in—it was all a cage built to steal her birthright and cover up a murder.

Clara looked up at the giant standing before her. "Why are you showing me this? You worked for them. You were their weapon."

Elias's expression darkened, a shadow crossing his scarred face. "Because ten years ago, when I was bleeding out in an alley after a job gone wrong, a kind woman found me. She didn't call the cops. She dragged me into her tiny apartment, stitched me up, and gave me what little food she had. She saved my life. That woman was your mother."

Clara gasped, covering her mouth.

"I didn't know who she was to Charles until I saw the hit order," Elias admitted, his voice thick with repressed rage. "I was too late to save her. But I swear on my life, Clara. I won't be too late to save you."

Clara wiped her tears, her jaw setting into a hard line that suddenly resembled the ruthless grandfather she had never met. "I don't want to just be saved, Elias. I want to destroy them."
